Rewind. It’s 5:30 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 5, 2015, and your alarm is blaring. It doesn’t matter that today is considered the most depressing day of the year with a return to work after the holidays. Today is your new start. You followed all the rules: You went to bed early, slept in your gym clothes, got up on the first alarm, had your Zone shake, and were feeling pretty proud of yourself working out at 6 a.m.
Fast forward to Feb. 2, 2015. It’s Monday morning at 5:30 a.m. You hear the alarm blaring and proceed to hit snooze three times. Last night was the Super Bowl, the beer and wings might have blown your diet, and there is no way you are getting out of bed. This might begin the decline of your New Year’s Resolution, but it doesn’t have to be. You just need a back-up plan, and that’s where we can help.
Most people look to their physicians for diet advice, but the sad truth is that on average only about 20 hours of a medical student’s four-year career are devoted to nutrition. Of this, their education is more on the pathways of metabolism rather than on how to educate patients on healthy eating. This was the impetus behind the launching of our coaching program. By educating our ZoneHealth Coaches on the principles of the Zone, we can help fill in the voids where physicians can’t on the principles of healthy eating and getting people to achieve their wellness goals. There is no doubt that people who have accountability and someone checking in with them regularly are more successful.
Zone Labs began the foundation of its coaching program in 2011. This program has evolved over time, but at the heart of the program are individuals who have experienced how the anti-inflammatory Zone Diet has improved their health and the health of their loved ones. These individuals rely on this passion to begin the rigorous education to become a certified ZoneHealth Coach. The certification process involves reading and being familiar with six of Dr. Sears’ books on the science behind the Zone along with his personal presentations on late- breaking research. This knowledge is then tested through an exam in which 100 percent has to be achieved in order to become certified. Once certified, individuals then have weekly calls with Dr. Sears and his staff to discuss the latest science and lifestyle tips. For a fee, the ZoneHealth Coach will help you individualize a plan that fits your needs, and then you can decide how much or how little support you need. Being a product of the products led them to become coaches, and now they can help others achieve their goals.
