My invitation to be a speaker at the 32nd World Congress of Sports Medicine in Rome was only one stop along the way. Although my talk, “Omega-3 Fatty Acids in Athletic Performance,” focused on the use of high-dose omega-3 fatty acids to treat concussion injuries, I also had the opportunity to discuss the literature relating omega-3 fatty acids to the reduction of inflammation and improvement of mood, metabolism, and reaction times in athletes. The talk was well received, but it was just the start of more venues in Europe.
The rest of my European trip picked up steam when I gave lectures on the Zone Diet to hundreds of physicians and pharmacists from Turin to Venice and then Naples (at a hotel at the base of Mt. Vesuvius no less), finishing off with our 30th Zone Consultant course in Bologna. This was followed by a quick trip to Madrid to give a talk to a number of sports coaches and finish up with a gourmet Zone lunch to mark the launching my latest book translated into Spanish.
On my return to Boston, I found out that the Argentina Olympic Committee has decided to make the Zone Diet the standard practice for all of their 2016 Olympic hopefuls. (They will do anything to beat Brazil in the medal count for the upcoming Olympics, even getting their athletes to eat correctly.)
Maybe there is a correlation that the more I leave America, the more good things happen on the acceptance of the Zone in the rest of the world.
