Cheer yourself on and avoid defeat

Occasionally, everyone needs some encouragement. As a child, you thrived on praise for even the smallest accomplishments, such as learning to tie your own shoes, or you received kudos for more important endeavors, like getting good grades in school. As adults, we know that some tasks we encounter are going to be harder than others. In the past perhaps it was learning calculus; today, it may be the duties of a new job. In school you might have had a tutor help you figure out those calculus problems. Hopefully, that tutor was encouraging and helped you get through the course successfully. Now, you would ask a co-worker to help you learn the new work duties. In either case, you felt good about getting the help because it helped you succeed, and you were grateful to your helper for helping you realize you could do it. Chances are you have helped others as well, whether a friend going through a rough time, or a child who was pouting and insisting, “NO I can’t,” to whom you said, “Yes, you can!”

It is part of my job as a personal trainer to motivate and encourage my clients, especially when he or she misses a few workouts or strays off their food plan. This being the beginning of the year, I am doing plenty of that, but disconcertingly, I have been hearing some comments that share a common theme: A lack of confidence and a self-defeating attitude. Instead of saying, “I am excited about becoming more active,” it’s more like, “I’m so out of shape” and “Here I go again – we’ll see how long I last this time”. I can say things like “Each day you will feel better and become stronger” or “Let’s take it one step at a time.” Some people take that as encouragement; however, I know from experience that you tend to believe the things you tell yourself, especially if it is repeated over and over again. Once you have convinced yourself that you will fail, you will!

This behavior can become a vicious cycle, repeated again and again. Although you may have the intention to “really stick to my exercise plan this time,” if you still have those thoughts going on in your subconscious, you cannot be successful in the long-run. And so this cycle maintains itself: You start with good intentions, keep it up for a while, and then slowly drop out only to start all over again with that feeling of self-defeat!

How do you break out of that rut and finally achieve the success you deserve? First, you must learn to be your own biggest supporter. It is not always easy, but the following suggestions have worked for many of my clients and have certainly worked for me. They may be new to you or perhaps you’ve heard them before. In either case, think of these ideas as being a box of tools — you might have to try several until you find the one that works best for the job at hand.

u  Change your self-talk

We become so accustomed to hearing those voices in our heads that we don’t even realize what we are doing. I suggest that you write down all the negative thoughts that pop into your head. After you put them down on paper, take a good look at them. Ask yourself if these statements are true. For example, some of my clients will observe another gym member running on a treadmill or vigorously lifting weights, while showing off a toned physique. Their statement may sound something like this: “I could never be like her (or him).”

If you write down this statement, ask yourself the following: Is everyone the same? Do you know how long that other person has been working out like that? (Perhaps they have been doing it for quite a while and had to start slowly to build up to that level of fitness, like you). How do you know what you can achieve if you have never tried? Or, do you even have to worry about what someone else can do compared to yourself?

Next, re-write that statement as a positive one: “I can start my exercise program at a level that is comfortable for me.” If you can think of more, go ahead and write them too! “I am an individual, and I can be the best I can be!” These statements are called affirmations. When you write them, they should make sense to you and sound realistic. One way to ensure that is to talk to yourself as you would to a friend or a co-worker who needs encouragement. You would want someone else to feel empowered by your words, right? If you can do that, you can empower yourself!

u  Use the affirmations

Once you write your affirmations, you don’t have to tuck them in a box and forget about them. You can be creative and use them to help you in those tough times when you feel down about yourself. You could write them down on a post-it note and stick it on your mirror in your bathroom. (One of my clients did that!) I had the brilliant idea of putting my positive words to myself on my screensaver for my computer. Whenever my screen switched to that mode, the words “you have the power” would scroll by every few seconds. I would glance at it and be motivated every time. Perhaps a mnemonic device would work for you, a key word or object, a rubber band around your wrist – again, it should be meaningful to you, and you can be creative with it!

u Become resilient to setbacks

One other way you can help yourself succeed is to “roll with the punches” or learn to accept the setbacks as part of a process. It often takes more than one or two even many tries to get something right. As Winston Churchill said, “Success is the ability to go from one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm.” So maybe you missed going to the gym last week because you could not find one hour in your hectic schedule. Instead of looking at that as a failure, think about going for half-hour sessions instead; then make it back for that one hour when your schedule clears. Perhaps your initial goal of going to the gym five times a week is unrealistic if you have a busy lifestyle. In that case, you could still aim for three times and on the other days take extra stairs or a walk around your block in the morning, etc. I know how to counter just about any exerciser’s excuse with a solution, but if you learn to do that for yourself, you will develop the resilience that will ensure your long-term success!

As I mentioned at the beginning of my list of suggestions, these are tools to try, but if they are to work for you, you must practice. It is very easy to forget to use them unless you make it a habit. I worked with a woman who was wearing a T-shirt with the words “Si´, se puede” on the front. When I showed her the next exercise, she exclaimed, “I can’t do that!” Although I know very little Spanish, I did know what the words on her T-shirt meant (“yes, you can”). I asked her to tell me why she was wearing that shirt. She said, “To encourage my kids” (she was a school teacher). I asked her, “Can’t you use that for yourself?” She laughed, and she did the exercise! Although it is nice to have encouragement and praise from others, if it comes from within, you will always be strong. Use the tools – you can do it!

Dr. Barry Sears, PhD.Dr. Barry Sears is a leading authority on the dietary control of hormonal response. A former research scientist at the Boston University School of Medicine and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dr. Sears has dedicated his research efforts over the past 30 years to the study of lipids. I have a very exhausting job as a flight attendant. I read the "Omega Rx Zone" about 4 years ago and started taking the fish oil. I am 47 and have been flying for 22 years. I am very active, I run and lift weights. But combining lack of regular sleep, a physically demanding job, and irregular eating patterns this job takes a toll on the body. Since taking the fish oil, I have noticed that I do not get exhausted. I get tired, but not exhausted. I stopped taking it for a couple of months and then started taking another company's fish oil. Prior to following the Zone Diet, my body fat was around 15% and my weight around 153 pounds. No matter what I did, my weight and body fat did not change much. I regularly cycled 20-30 hours per week logging well over 400 miles. That had little impact on body fat or weight. Diet also seemed to have little impact on body fat or weight. Within a couple of months of following the zone diet, my weight dropped rather quickly to 142 pounds and body fat to about 8%. I still regularly cycle up to 20 hours per week (during the summer). I have also started strength training. I eat about 16 blocks per day. I take 3.6 grams of fish oil per day, along with Vitamin E, Alpha Lipoic Acid, CoQ10, and B & C vitamins.
