Take the stairway to inspiration

Like many of us, I was one of those people who would never purposely seek out a physical challenge. It was always easier to drive than to walk. When in a building, if I had a choice between stairs or the elevator, I, of course, chose the elevator. All that changed when years ago I became a convert to the physical way of life. So now I not only seek out those extra opportunities to be active, I help teach others to do the same.

That leads me to talk about stairs. I started going out of my way to take the stairs, searching for the stairwell while others waited for those slow, tedious elevators. By the time I reached my floor, the elevator was just arriving. I now work in a building where I have to park way down below in an underground parking garage, and I will most often take the stairs to the top, even though I am laden down with my cumbersome necessities. I just can't get enough of those stairs!

It was more than five years ago when I heard that there was a competition in which you could climb lots of stairs, all at once … in a high-rise building downtown. Seventy-five floors, 1,500 steps! That got my attention. I was interested in competing in some type of physical event, but neither running nor cycling appealed to me. But this sounded so different and unique. I inquired further and soon ended up signing up for the stair climb! Not only would it be a great challenge, it was also a fund-raiser for a good cause. The organization sponsoring the event was also providing training for the climb in local buildings that would let us use the stairwells. I told my friends I was doing it, and they told me I was crazy. Maybe they were right, but I was determined.

So I went to the training stair climbs. Now, I was in pretty good shape so I thought, "How hard could this be?" I was rudely awakened to just how hard it is after about five floors (about 20 stairs to a floor) as I started to gasp to take in oxygen, and my thighs started burning and feeling heavier. As I continued with it, I learned to pace myself, and I learned some techniques to make it a little easier, such as taking two steps at a time, pulling on the rail with my arms to help draw my body up, and taking deeper breaths in and out. Physiologically, my lung capacity expanded, allowing more oxygen to reach my muscles, and the capillaries in those muscles increased to allow more blood flow to carry that oxygen. I was improving my already good fitness level.

If this stair climbing was hard for me, what about the large group of fellow climbers, many of whom were just starting to exercise! I'm just obsessive/compulsive, but what made them do it? Putting up with the leaden legs, struggling to breathe, going up stuffy, dreary-looking stairwells. Before this endeavor these people, many of them local office workers, were essentially sedentary. In addition, we had to walk down those same stairs after going up 42 floors and more. All that deceleration pulls and tears on muscles and joints, resulting in extreme soreness, the kind that affects the activities of daily living (like sitting, standing up, walking) and takes days to recover from! How motivating is that? But most of the group stayed with it, laughing the pain and discomfort off and returning each week for more.

We were well into training, when the most terrifying event in recent history took place on 9/11/01. We were in such a state of shock, and it seemed like the whole event would have to be cancelled. But instead, our resolve only strengthened. We felt obligated to carry on and show that we would not let such an act of violence stop us. The mood was somber as we climbed, but as a group we had come to know one another and would give each other kudos as we passed each other on the stairs: "way to go." "Good job."

The day of the contest finally arrived. I could not help but think, "If those firefighters could climb all those stairs in the World Trade Center with all the smoke and mayhem going on, then I could do this!" Up I went, not knowing what to expect. The practice climbs had all been in buildings with fewer than 60 floors, but this was an additional 15 floors! And I felt it, too. It's indescribable, the fatigue and struggle to breathe and just wishing it would be over with. Thoughts of "what was I thinking, signing up for this?" kept popping up. Not soon enough, I saw the light at the end, and someone was calling my name (they know who you are from the bib you are wearing with your number on it), and the cheers started encouraging me. I found the strength to bound up the last few stairs. I made it to the top!

As my wobbly legs barely made it to the reception area, I watched on a large video screen as climber after climber arrived to the same screams and cheers I had experienced. The last set of entrants was the "master" group, 60 years plus. The loudest cheers I heard all day were for a man, 80 years young. It took him two hours, but he did it.

The great thing is that I am still doing this contest, and I see many of the same people five years later doing it too. These are people of all shapes and sizes and fitness levels, young and old (a 70ish year old man is in my morning training group this year). Why would the average person want to take on such an "extreme" physical challenge?

There could be several answers to that, but you might think of other events that bring people together to take on similar challenges. There are events like the 545-mile L.A.-San Francisco AIDS bike ride, three-day breast cancer walks, marathons, 10ks, 5k run/walks and many more. These events pull people together who hold the same convictions and in the process can inspire individuals to do more than they thought was physically possible. This sense of accomplishment can be life changing and can result in a long-term commitment to taking care of one's health and well-being that begins with an active lifestyle. In addition to jump-starting a fitness program, many of these events offer training and exercise guidance, even personal training, to the novice participant. I was part of a team that led a warm-up and stretch session for an MS walk. I have never led so many people in a group exercise class!

If you are looking for the inspiration to get yourself started on a fitness program, why not find a good cause, bring along a friend, and give it a try? You can start small. Many marathons and one-half marathons also hold 10 and/or 5k run/walks at the same event. Or try something more if you are already exercising regularly but are looking for something to put a spark in your program. Whether you win the event or not, you can't lose if you find yourself falling in love with activity all over again!

Dr. Barry Sears, PhD.Dr. Barry Sears is a leading authority on the dietary control of hormonal response. A former research scientist at the Boston University School of Medicine and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dr. Sears has dedicated his research efforts over the past 30 years to the study of lipids. I have a very exhausting job as a flight attendant. I read the "Omega Rx Zone" about 4 years ago and started taking the fish oil. I am 47 and have been flying for 22 years. I am very active, I run and lift weights. But combining lack of regular sleep, a physically demanding job, and irregular eating patterns this job takes a toll on the body. Since taking the fish oil, I have noticed that I do not get exhausted. I get tired, but not exhausted. I stopped taking it for a couple of months and then started taking another company's fish oil. Prior to following the Zone Diet, my body fat was around 15% and my weight around 153 pounds. No matter what I did, my weight and body fat did not change much. I regularly cycled 20-30 hours per week logging well over 400 miles. That had little impact on body fat or weight. Diet also seemed to have little impact on body fat or weight. Within a couple of months of following the zone diet, my weight dropped rather quickly to 142 pounds and body fat to about 8%. I still regularly cycle up to 20 hours per week (during the summer). I have also started strength training. I eat about 16 blocks per day. I take 3.6 grams of fish oil per day, along with Vitamin E, Alpha Lipoic Acid, CoQ10, and B & C vitamins. I also take GLA, which in my opinion, has significantly reduced fatigue and improved recovery times after exercise.
