Why do Plants contain Highly Potent Antioxidants?
During the process of photosynthesis (the conversion of sunlight to energy), a large number of free radicals are produced. Plants require a high concentration of antioxidants to protect themselves against cellular damage. Plant pigments, primarily carotenoids and flavonoids, are largely responsible for this protection. Research has shown that ingestion of these compounds by humans may result in similar protection. Sea Vegetable Sources

Zone Labs chose a blend of sea vegetation to effectively utilize the diversified benefits of different varieties. This is important since research has clearly demonstrated that the nutritional properties of sea vegetation as with land vegetation differ between varieties. There are more than 1700 varieties of sea vegetation, with the main groups commonly classified according to their predominant color.

Brown Sea Vegetation: This group is normally found and harvested in cold ocean waters. The best known of this classification would be the kelps. They are generally found to grow in enormous beds reaching toward the surface of the water. So fantastic is their growing ability, deriving nutrients from the mineral rich waters and the sun, that when harvested, the root plant has the ability to repair and grow an average of six inches per day!

Red Sea Vegetation: This classification is generally a deep-water variety, which can be found 200 feet below the surface. Red sea vegetation prefers deeper, shadier locations than brown sea vegetation and researchers attribute their color to the subdued light that barely reaches deep waters. Red sea vegetables are rich in carotenes and valuable nutrients.

Green Sea Vegetation: This form of sea vegetation most closely resembles green leafy vegetables. Green sea vegetation is much smaller in size compared to the brown and red varieties of sea vegetation, but has an equally impressive nutrient content. Green sea vegetables live and flourish from the plentiful sunlight and nutrients in the sea. Biological Activity
IASC certification is admirable and has been needed for a long time; but it doesn't guarantee retention of biologically active polysaccharides in aloe vera. Certification has created a level playing field and is good for the consumer. However, scientists generally agree that retention of the medium to higher molecular weight polysaccharides enhance the biological activity found in aloe vera. In fact, the polysaccharide synergism, so notably present in aloe, is allowed to achieve its highest potential in the 50,000 to 100,000 molecular weight range.

Zone Labs utilizes aloe vera that has broken the traditional methods of processing and has patent (pending) harvesting and production processes so it can guarantee a retention of medium weight polysaccharides (those in the 50,000-100,000 mw or dalton range). Illustrated below are the results of work completed by Univera Pharmaceuticals Inc. showing immune restoration (% recovery) for varying molecular weights of aloe vera polysaccharides. Due to our aloe vera refinement to 50,000 - 100,000 mw range, it is important to note the 75% restoration of the medium molecular weight polysaccharides as present in the Zone Labs aloe vera.

Nearly all aloe vera products on the market that have been over processed, degraded or mishandled and fall into the 1,000 - 50,000 mw range (mostly in the 1,000-5,000 mw). These aloe vera products have lost the majority of the immune restoration capability of the raw aloe. Additionally, the higher molecular weight polysaccharides (more indicative of extracts of acemannen) do not provide the immune restoration support of the medium molecular weight polysaccharides.
