I've heard grapeseed oil is so healthful and better for, say, stir frying, but when I got it home I noticed that it said it was polyunsaturated. It was a good brand...maybe Spectrum..I forgot...is it good or not? jane

Dr. Sears will choose one question per day and post an answer here. This is a chance for Zone Members to get feedback directly from the developer of the Zone. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Today's question "Grape seed oil & extract" Dear Dr. Sears, Dear Dr. Sears, I was reading a book a couple of years ago and they stated that grape seed oil was very good for a person, so I have been using it since. I see that on one of the health reports that grape seed extract is a very good thing, would that be the same as the grapeseed oil? Also I have been taking a Lecithin capsule every day and wondered if that would be o.k. I have inherited heart trouble and have had a angioplasty in October 1988 and have had no problem since, but reading your book I figured that I would try the Zone and have found it very good for me, thank you for your concern, and sharing your knowledge with everyone. Greta H. Greta H. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dear Greta H., Dear Greta: Grape seed extract would be rich in phytochemicals. Given the choice of the two, I would suggest the grape seed extract. However, unless you are following the basic Sears Diet (lots of fruits and vegetables, adequate levels of protein, and supplementation with high-dose fish oil), then any support will be very limited in its impact. Hi, Polyunsaturated oils (aka polyunsaturated fatty acids, or PUFAs) are necessary for health, but in very small amounts. If you're following the Zone diet, you'll be getting enough without additional supplementation. They will raise LDL cholesterol levels if eaten in more significant amounts. The reason we add monounsaturated fats to Zone meals is that they don't negatively impact blood lipid levels. I used to use grapeseed oil, but since I've learned more about the physiological effects of dietary fats I've stopped using it. Sue
