Fellow Zoners, Does anyone know of anything specifically that can be adjusted in a child's diet to help ADD or similar behavior? I have been giving my younger daughter (soon to be middle child :D ) one fish oil capsule a day, and it has done her so much good. Tim

I don't know how old your daughter is, but the dose of fish oil found to be effective for ADD/ADHD in studies with school age children is about 16 grams daily, which is equal to about 2 tablespoons Omega RX liquid fish oil. This can usually eventually be reduced to around one tablespooon a day.[/color:5509b7309a]

As I recall, the 16g dose is appropriate from the age of 6 or 8. My son has ADD (without the H). His results were dramatic, his grades going from failing to A's and B's in two mos time. He was in high school at the time. FO has literally changed his life. I would add that he also eats the Zone diet. FO coupled with insulin control is necessary to see the best results. I'd also add he had been recieving special ed. help all his school yrs. The teachers (and us) were amazed by the difference that adding FO made. He's now a sophomore in college and maintaining those grades (and still using FO and eating in the Zone).[/color:0cf27b742e]

She was close to being held back in school, until we got her diagnosed. We put her on Concerta, and her results were dramatic. However, I have always felt a bit uncomfortable putting her on a drug. I have been reading about using fish oil to help with ADD and have given it lots of thought. I don't want to alter her success in school, now that she is doing well. So, I am going to phase in the fish oil as I phase out the Concerta. I bought a bottle of the liquid fish oil and "tested" her response to it. Initially, she tolerated the minimal dose well when mixed into a drink. I have not tried a larger dose yet. So, over the next month or so, I will be working on this.

Good choice to try to switch her to FO. Keep us informed of her progress. :D

Sue, how did you arrive at the conclusion to give your son 16 grams of FO? In his book, "The Anti Inflamation Zone", Dr. Sears recommends 2.5 gms for 'healthy individuals' and 8 gms for those already suffering of silent inflamation (like ADD children are supposed to have.) On the other hand, Dr. Sears also jokes that the only 'side effect' of taking too much FO is that it makes you smarter. However, at $62.00 a bottle, it also has the 'side effect' of dwindling the contents of my wallet. Hence, I want to offer the precise amount of FO in order to be successful but without going broke. Did you get advice from someone on the dosage or did you just experiment? Have a wonderful weekend and thank you for sharing with all of us!!!

I think that the dose in the book is a starting dose, and you would have to adjust it according to the response.

It's the dose he used in the studies with ADD/ADHD kids, and to my knowledge is considered the stardard dose in ADD/ADHD kids age 6 and older. You can find more details in "The Omega RX Zone". As I understand from what Barry explained to me, the bodies of persons with ADD/ADHD deteriorate FO rapidly so they need much more to get the same benefit that other people get from smaller amounts.[/color:cd3700dfd3]
