Hi! I have a 16 month old son that I have been breastfeeding since he was born. Since I have been taking fish oil, I have not been giving him any. However I think he is going to wean soon, so I will want to start giving it to him. I found in one of the FAQs that you should give a 1 year old 1-2 grams, but I am not sure how to measure this. The dosage (for an adult I assume) is 1 tsp. Does anyone know what the dosage (in teaspoons or ml) would be for a 1 year old?
Thanks,
Christy |

1 teaspoon is 5 ml. Does that help?
Someone else asked this question, in a post which I can't find right now, and the suggested maximum dose was 1/2 teaspoon. It was posted by Dr. Sears tech. |

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I know the conversion between tsp. and ml. I was wondering how to figure out how much 1-2 grams is in tsp. or ml. Or, if I could get a correct dosage for a 16 month old (about 23 lbs), that would be great. If 1/2 tsp. is the maximum, it might not be ideal to give him that much. And since the stuff is expensive, I definitely don't want to give him more than is ideal.
Thanks,

I'll be taking remedial reading class next semester, so bear with me.
1 teaspoon is 4.5 grams. Is that better? :) |

1 tsp of OmegaRX is 2.7 grams of long-chain omega-3s (EPA+DHA). So 1 gram would be roughly 1/3 tsp. |

Clarification: When you say to give the child 1-2 grams, are you saying 1-2 grams of epa/dha or 1-2 grams of fish oil? Big difference. Fish oil is only 60% epa/dha. That's why 1 teaspon(4.5 grams) is only 2.7 grams of epa/dha.
The recommendation I mentioned was 1/2 teaspoon max of fish oil. |

Here is exactly what Dr. Sears said in the FAQ I read (I did a web search for '"Fish oil" AND child' to find it):
In Norway, it is a recommended by the government that all children must be given 1 teaspoon of cod liver oil after the age of 4 weeks. That would be about 0.8 grams of long-chain Omega-3 fatty acids. I am a little more conservative in that I think that once a child starts taking solid food you should supplement the food with about 0.5 of long-chain Omega-3 until age 1, and then 1-2 grams thereafter.
So I guess we're talking about 1-2 grams of long-chain Omega-3, I will probably give 1/2 tsp which would be about 1.4 grams, right in the range Dr. Sears recommends. Am I figuring that correctly?
Thanks,
