questions about ALA and GLA

    I'm new to the zone and am in the process of trying to reverse type 2 diabetes. I am taking a PGFO product and I am trying to eat in the zone. I was also taking a GLA supplement and using flax oil for my source of good fats. I noticed that when using ALA (flax) i began to experience very mild nausea, and am interested in why this might be? Also, since i am taking the PGFO do i really need to take GLA, or ALA and if so... in what recommended amounts? If not... do i just stick to nuts/olives/avacados and olive/sesame/macadamia oils for my good fat sources? Dr Sears first book seemed to indicate GLA was very important in controlling eicosanoid production and in the omega rx zone he seems to indicate that it has become much less important, but didn't fully understand why this is? I hope someone can enlilghten me :idea: ... thx in advance

    To my knowledge, Barry doesn't consider GLA less important now. It is needed in very small amounts.

    Yes in small amounts, but he seems to have downplayed its importance in favor of EPA/DHA and indicates that excess GLA can spillover into AA production. Hence the question regarding if it is still necessary and by how much? and whether it is worth while to take ALA at all? Or... should i just stick to PGFO and good fats without worrying about ALA or GLA supplementation?

    as long as you are using the PGFO it isn't necessary to use additional flax oil. as far as the GLA, Dr. Sears recommends it in only very small aounts. 2 bowls of old fashioned oatmeal a week, or just take one capsule of Borage oil a week. good luck with your attempts at diabetes control. I have been successful with mynay of my type II patients who strictly follow the Zone, and use adequate amounts of fish oil.

    There is much info from Dr. Sears regarding this on www.drsears.com. We suggest conducting a search in the "Ask the Dr." section of the site. GLA is recommended in small amounts, 2-5 mg. per day. You don't want to take too much GLA as it can spillover and be converted to arachidonic acid. Slow-cooking oatmeal (30 min. or more to cook) 2 to 3 times per week will give you plenty of GLA. Tech
