I do no know how folks do it. its not filling. And we know from Dr. Sears that its not the most favorable to get your vegetables. After rmoving an old tree and its roots this morning, clearing roots, and planting a replacement decorative flowering tree next to where the old one was, my workout for today. We then had our grandson over for a few hours. He was exhausted, so he was lying on me, with the two dogs up on the couch, as well. I put some modified funny car race on TV for our Grandson to watch before falling asleep after 10 minutes. I was too comfortable and did not want to disturb him, so I left the TV on as background, and couldn't reach the remote. . Anyway one of those Juicing blender 1/2 hour infomercials came on: 4 easy payments of $49.95 plus S&H, BUT, if you call in the next 30 minutes, only 3 payments, and not 30 day money back guarantee, but a full 60 days! And you ordinary blender can't do this ..... . I never watch those, and this confirmed why. Any way, after our son, his dad picked him up, I thought I'd give my good strong reliable basic 6 button simple Kitchen Aide blender a whirl! (literally and figuratively.) . Three huge leaves of Kale, a handful of shredded cabbage, a medium tomato (1/2 block) from our garden, A recently picked small Honey Crisp Apple (3/4 block), a large kiwi (1/2 block) , and about 3/4 cup mixed berries (1 block) with about 1/2 cup water. Threw in a touch of EVOO for the Fat in addition to the Fat in my chicken (Protein), . Set it on ICE (Pulse) for about 30 seconds, then set at level 5 of 6 for 1 minute. Juicing with my "ordinary blender"? - no problem! Had 3 oz cooked fresh, farm pastured chicken.(4 oz pre-cooked). And 1 block (1-1/2 TBL) dry oatmeal Making a 4 block meal. . BUT, it did not fill me up. And we'll see if it fills me up for 3 hours, let alone 4! Doubtful, because the food was liquidized, more surface area, will not digest as slowly as chewing the fruits and veggies, raw. And I missed actually eating and enjoying the food. Off to church and time will tell ... . Had 3 oz cooked fresh, farm pastured chicken.(4 oz pre-cooked). And 1 block (1-1/2 TBL) dry oatmeal

I make soups all the time in the blender. I figure if a smoothie is good on the Zone Diet, a blended soup should be fine, too. I digest the vegetables better when they are blended in a soup. I'll usually cook lots of frozen onions with another vegetable or two and then blend it giving me 4 - 5 blocks of soup which I eat one block at a time over 2 days. My favorite is 1 bag frozen onions (3 carb blocks), 1 bag frozen asparagus (1/2 carb block) and 2.5 oz frozen carrots (1/2 carb block). This makes four 1-cup carb blocks of easy, yummy soup. I usually eat it without adding anything because it tastes slightly sweet. Sometimes I'll add salt and hummus. |

As 1 block, I can see. But not for all 3 or 4 blocks of a full meal. And it did hold me, but just at 3 hours. |

Come to think of it, Larry, and I don't know why I didn't think of it before, since we do have smoothies for breakfast, why not hrow in a few vegetables, even better, cruciferous vegetables in them? Probably because we usually think of smoothies as being made with fruit, esp. berries. And because I never thought of my "ordinary blender" as a low cost "juicer". . Esp. in light of my latest post on Broccoli. Though I do grow my own sprouts for salads, which includes Broccoli sprouts. . So, by adding some Kale and other cruciferous vegetables to the breakfast smoothie, the blocks are negligible, and on those days once or twice a week, that I have a smoothie, it gives me an additional serving of cancer prevention. . Thanks for the idea, Larry! Had a breakfast smoothie this morning, and I just threw some Kale in ...

My daughter puts kale or spinach in the smoothies she makes for her kids every day (a toddler and 3 1/2 yr old). She been doing this since they were each about 7 mos. old and began eating solids. |

We had a thread here a few years ago in which green smoothies were discussed. There were lots of good ideas and suggestions in that thread for adding veggies to smoothies. Spinach was one idea, and I recall adding cucumber, avocado, and celery. |

Something else to consider, not everyone will be able to stay in the Zone with liquified carbohydrate. It's been my experience that in regard to satiety men seem to do better with liquids then women. |

Related: I was just talking to my acupuncturist (see her for my Piriformis Syndrome, which finally now seems to be starting to heal!) Praise God! Any way, she was telling me that women in general tend to have weaker digestion/digestion systems then men. She, herself, can not tolerate any raw foods very well. So, that too, might help to at least partially explain Sue's statement that men tend to do better with liquid Carbs, such as in juicing. And men tend to have, again in general, weaker gall bladder/kidney than women. Digestion systems in "Eastern" medicine/thought is related o blood flow, and also helps to explain why women tend more to varicose or spider veins. Her words, not mine.

Hi, I was wondering if juicing actually shoots up the sugar in your body and thus your insulin level goes up too quickly - that would be bad wouldn't it be? Furthermore, I do agree with you that juicing does not stop the hunger in me. I did do juicing when I was pregnant and turned out that I was juicing too much I was getting myself into type 2 diabetes. Then I stopped and now I'm normal. Does anyone have that kind of experience? |

Yes, jee, juices and other forms of liquified carbohydrate elevate blood sugar faster than eating the whole fruit or vegetable does. This in turn leads to increased insulin levels. Juice is not recommended for the Zone. |

Thank you Sue for confirming that. And BTW congrats on losing your weight. I am going to try to lose 5 more lbs. to get to my ideal weight. And am in the zone diet for 2 weeks now and feel happier and more positive. Hopefully, I'll get my cholesterol and BP under control and won't need them ever again like you (for your BP medication). I took statin before but I had to stop it bec. it was giving such bad side effects. So, I'm hoping I'll be alright soonest. :D |
