Hi all, I stopped lifting weights because my fibromyalgia started really acting up, and I didn't know--I still don't know--whether the involuntary tics and other things that keep me up at nighttime were partly triggered by my fibro. That was probably six or seven weeks ago. My arms still look nice, and I'm going back to lifting weights but on a much smaller scale until my fibro is controlled, as it is no fun trying to sleep and jerking awake and I've had many nights with NO sleep due to breath-stopping, heart-stopping, involuntary tics, and congestion/PND that was strong enough to block my breathing (or so it seems). Anyway. But my stomach is starting to have several lines of loose skin on the lower part of my stomach, sagging when I suck in my stomach. I've lost something like 15 lbs the past few months. I'm going back to the gym classes--I feel well enough now and I'll keep my exercise much more limited until my health stuff is resolved. BUT. question--my arms no longer sag and don't have any loose skin, phew! But what do I do when it comes to my STOMACH? Are there particular kinds of classes, or particular kinds of exercises, etc.,that can help my stomach to become more firm? I mean, like I can lift weights for my arms, but how can my stomach, well, lift weights? Alexy |

Mark Sisson actually addressed this (loose skin) on his website (MarksDailyApple) a number of weeks ago. I forget the jist of it. You can do a search; but, I will also. And if I find it, I'll post. |

ok, I'll look it up ... I dorecall a discussion here about loose skin, the need to lift weights, etc ... but I didn't realize I was losing weight so fast when I took off wheat, dairy, etc., from my diet ... LOL. Needless to say, I gorged on Smarties, a diet coke, and some M & Ms this morning ... but went back to the diet right after that. I honestly dont find it any more tasty than what I eat ... :-) |

Sarah, a lot of how you skin reacts to significant weight loss, even slow loss, has to do with your genetics, the elasticity of you skin being a factor. |

I guess, but I exercised my arms a lot, and they look great, while my stomach is sagging at the lower part ... so if that were true, then I'd be sagging all over ... and I had flabby arms, skin sagging, before, but I started lifting weights and it got toned. I just don't know how to, well, get my stomach to lift weights. hahaha ... but I'm checking out the website ... and I found this one:

Hi Cranberrycat, if you're reading this, hopefully---the gelatin is not for the protein, it's because both Mark's Apple website and the zone tech support both said that gelatin (also spelled as gelatine) can help with loose skin, and I don't have loose skin anywhere in me but in the lower part of my stomach, where there are like a dozen folds if I pull my stomach in ... so the gelatin and vitamin c too is for helping to firm that part up. Still trying to get back into weight-lifting, still trying to find out if one can, uh, weight-lift one's actual stomach too! LOL ... I'm sure there are exercises that strengthen the stomach ro whatever so ... ALso Sue said that it could naturally resolve itself over time ... Alexy |

Maybe I should try a little gelatin, I have a bit of loose skin on my tummy! As far as Tummy exercises, take lessons from folks who know bwtter. There have been plenty of commercials and hyped products promoting exercises for "6-pack abs.". They really do not work. Better, the front and side Obliques and other muscles around your tummy, are part of your Core. Look for an all-around set of exercises to strengthen your core. As you strengthen your Core, you'll also be better all-around. I am not a Fitness expert (nor do i even pretend to be on late night TV!), so do some research or seek out a fitness trainer st your local fitness club or YMCA.

Hi John. I do go to a gym, so I'll see if I can chat up a fitness trainer :-) What you said about strengthening my core makes sense ... I actually would love a six-pack, but, that's not what really matters the most in life, LOL ... Alexy |

Losing weight slowly and having enough protein in your diet as you lose weight (gelatin is protein) are both said to contribute to a more positive outcome regarding excess loose skin with weight loss. My previous comment about how time may help things in that department, I did not mean to imply it will completely go away. A lot depends on your genes, the elasticity of your skin, etc. |
