1 Impact of Zone Diet on GERD - Relevance: 1007
Q: I have acquired an increasing incidence of GERD. Looking back, the symptoms seem to have started and escalated around four years ago when I first started on the Zone. Now, the GERD seems to act up a few times a year and lasts longer and longer. This time I can't shake it. Not only do I have more acid reflux, but it seems that my lower esophageal sphincter (LES) no longer shuts tightly as it should. Could this be related to my much higher protein intake since I started on the Zone? If yes, what is it doing to my LES and how do I correct this? THANKS. The Zone has profoundly improved my life. A: GERD is a consequence of overproduction of acid in the stomach. What I suggest is taking about 2.5 grams of EPA and DHA per day coupled with about 2 mg. of GLA. The small amounts of GLA can be metabolized into the eicosanoid PGE 1 that will inhibit the acid secretion in the stomach. The combination of the Zone Diet and the extra EPA should minimize the conversion of the added GLA into arachidonic acid (i.e. toxic fat).

2 Following the Zone with hiatal hernia - Relevance: 1004
Q: My 60-year-old mother follows the Zone Diet and suffers from hiatal hernia. Her medical doctor tells her to eat smaller meals to control its effects. Following the Zone, she eats every five hours. How can she eat smaller meals on the Zone? Every 2 1/2 hours? A: Dear Mark, Any time an internal body part pushes into an area where it doesn't belong, it's called a hernia. The hiatus is the junction of the between the esophagus and the stomach. The end result is GERD, commonly known as heart burn. Eating smaller meals in more frequent intervals significantly improves insulin control and will decrease the GERD. She should have the same number of blocks per day but split into whatever eating intervals work best for her.

3 Fish oil contraindications - Relevance: 1002
Q: Can someone with Hx of GERD and gastroparesis take fish oil? Is there any other supplement that this person may benefit from? This person also has fibromyalgia and is overweight. A: All the conditions that you mention are caused by inflammation. Therefore following an anti-inflammatory diet, like the Zone Diet, coupled with taking about 5 grams of EPA and DHA per day would an excellent way to begin reducing the underlying inflammation.
