I was wondering if there were local support groups for zone dieters? '

Hi Kevin, Was that you on the chat last night? I don't know of an official Zone Support groups but this site is basically a great support group, as Barry said. There used to be an ongoing series of threads here frmo week to week whthat was like a small support group within the4 larger forums. Someone started it anew each week to keep the length of the thread manageable. Maybe you'd like to do that. Regardless, I'll be happy to help if you have questions, and there are others here who I'm sure will do the same.

Kevin, I inquired about this at one time not too long ago, as I was interested in starting a support group locally. I talked to Zone people about it, but they told me that it was not allowed due to copyrights/branding laws, etc. IMO, it would have been an excellent avenue to get their products out there. As a long-time zoner, sure... there is always support here in the forums, However, IMO there is nothing like the human touch, meeting up with friends/acquaintances and discussing the Zone, allowing spontaneous conversation/questions come up, sharing triumphs and airing out struggles.

Thank you for your responses. The issue is that my wife has food allergies. Many of the "Zone" choice foods are taboo for her. So a one on one dialog with someone to discuss her options could pave the way for her to do the Zone. A support group could offer some support. A nutritionist that knows the Zone philosophy would also be a good resource. It was just a thought to put out there. BTW -- Sue, that was me that had the question, last evening at the video conference. |

I recently start the Zone Diet and am confused about the oatmeal. I've been cooking 4 tablespoons of oatmeal in 2/3 cup of milk for breakfast. How do I count the oatmeal? The know the milk is 1 P and 1 C. Thanks. I started the Zone Diet because I've heard it can help alleviate Meniere's symptoms. So far I feel a lot more energetic and more focused. |

About 1-1/2 Tbl, dry, steel cut oatmeal is 1 C block. 4 Tbl is about 24 NET g C or about 2-2/3 C blocks.

John, thanks for getting back to me. I am using slow-cooking old-fashioned oatmeal, store brand. I should switch to steel-cut oatmeal? So 3 TBSP dry oatmeal equal 2 C, cooked in 1/2 cup milk (which equals 1 C and 1 P), plus 1 egg and 1 egg white (until I get the Egg Beaters) equal 2 P, plus 1 tbsp olive oil to cook egg equals 3 F Total for breakfast: 3 P, 3 C, 3 F. Does that look right? I love this breakfast...could I do this every day? I appreciate the help. |

YES. Steel Cut is the only type that is favorable, has a Glycemic Load low enough. (I often eat a Tbl or so raw, like nuts, sometimes...) I asked Dr. Sears, and he says no difference whether cooked or raw, as long as its Steel Cut type. It is one of the few "grains" that I eat.

I just bought Irish steel-cut oats.....trying to figure out how to cook them so I end up with the right amount for 2-1/2 Tbsp of oats. |

PS - When I used old fashioned oats, I just cooked 2-1/2 Tbsp of oats in 2/3 cup milk for five minutes. I love oatmeal. Can't wait to try the steel-cut.

I have been using 1/4 cup egg substitute for breakfast every morning. But I just noticed that on the container it says 1/4 cup is 61g. Am I using the correct egg substitute? Thanks.
