I was recently in a horrible car accident, and suffered multiple injuries including brain trauma/mild concussion.

I was thinking that I should maybe be increasing my level of fish oil, but I was not sure - does anyone have experience with this, or any idea if I should increase my dose? Right now I'm just doing my usual of the 4 capsules of OmegaRx per day.

    Would love any advice!

    Jennifer,

Sorry to hear about your accident. Best wishes for a full recovery. You're right about fish oil being helpful for brain trauma. Dr. Sears presented a web conference last month about brain trauma and fish oil. Here's a link to it: http://www.webmeetinglogin.com/play...s-02152012

Good luck and hope you feel better soon.

Thanks for the well wishes Sue! I have been watching the web meeting for the last 45 minutes now, and it's almost over...It sounds like I probably SHOULD increase, but I'm not entirely clear on how much. I was thinking of maybe taking at least 2-4 more capsules per day possibly...Just have never had to deal with this sort of scenario before - I've always been good with taking the 4 capsules of OmegaRx :-/

Jennifer, I am sorry that you had such a terrible thing happen to you. Glad you are back here!

I would definitely increase the fish oil. I don't know how much, would recommend doubling it for sure, and possibly more. Your best guidance on this would be calling Zone Labs and talking to a Zone expert.

Possibly the information can also be found in the OMEGA RX ZONE, if you have a copy of this book handy. I have misplaced mine, otherwise I would look.

    Hope you are recovering well!

In a July publication of The Journal of Neurosurgery, Dr. Julian Bailes (BIRI) and Dr. Barry Sears (leading authority on anti-inflammatory nutrition, creator of Zone-Diet) found that supplementing rats with O3/DHA after head injuries reduced the observed issues with a concussion; (SOURCE via weightlosingideas.com)

“Animals receiving the daily fish oil supplement for 30 days post concussion had a greater than 98 percent reduction in brain damage compared with the animals that did not receive the supplement,” Dr. Sears said. “It is hypothesized that the omega-3 fatty acids in the fish oil reduced the neural inflammation induced by the concussion injury.”

O3/DHA has been documented to help with the inflammatory response of the body, many people use this SAFE and AVAILABLE supplement when training to temper swelling. It is also has shown great promise for the cardiovascular system, mainly heart health. Further investigation is underway in regards to humans with catastrophic brain injuries and concussions.

Ideally, it would be best if one was already supplementing with their ideal dosage. Next is to commence supplementation as soon as possible after the injury. Even after weeks or months omega 3 supplementation may be effective in minimizing the damage and helpful in reducing a post concussion syndrome.

One should also consider supplementing with polyphenols which protects the omega-3’s from oxidation within the body. This is especially beneficial for those who need to supplement with high dose fish oil, greater than 5g/d of EPA & DHA. Supplementing with only omega 3’s is okay, however, combining one’s omega 3 supplementation with polyphenols is ideal. Dr. Sears comments on polyphenols at these links:

To determine one’s optimal omega 3 dosage the AA/EPA test is most effective. Info at http://drsears.com/ArticlePreview/t...ault.aspx.
The test, a $150 value, will be offered complimentary for Zone Lab customers who have purchased 6 bottles of OmegaRx since January 1, 2012.

A new groundbreaking research study (attached) shows that OmegaRx® may be a “wonder drug” for the treatment of brain trauma. I was one of the co-authors of this study, which was published in the August issue of the prestigious Journal of Neurosurgery. This study demonstrated the remarkable ability of OmegaRx® to reduce brain damage induced by a concussion. It was shown that brain damage could be reduced by more than 98% if OmegaRx® was taken on a daily basis for 30 days after the injury. Brain trauma occurs more than 2 million times a year requiring more than 200,000 hospitalizations with more than 50,000 deaths per year. The causes range from car accidents to football concussions to simply falling off a bicycle. There is no known drug to treat these brain injuries, but now with adequate levels of omega-3 fatty acids, a new therapeutic approach is possible. More importantly, if OmegaRx® can treat brain trauma, then taking OmegaRx® on a daily basis will be the best way to prevent brain damage should accidental brain trauma be induced by events that occur in every-day life.
