hello, I'm new to Zone living and in my third week to manage my reactive hypoglycemia. I take thyroid medication and although I have read all of Dr. Sears' books I am worried that putting my body in the right hormonal balance may also help thyroid function in which case the medication I'm taking would cause me to be over-treated, and then end up hyperthyroid. A doctor DID over medicated me at one time in my life and I ended up in the ER many times with arrhythmia. VERY SCAREY..... Intakes about 3 months for thyroid dosages to change the body, so does anybody have any experience with being on the zone and taking thyroid medication? Did you need adjustments? If so, when? Thanks so much for any help. |

I don't think that the Zone will do that. The Zone may help to keep things from worsening, but you probably won't be decreasing your hormonal needs with regard to thyroid. |

Desiree, I don't think you need to have concern. People who take thyroid hormone medication usually need it because either they have had the thyroid removed, or because their thyroid is damaged to the point that it has become incapable of producing sufficient amounts of thyroid hormone. The Zone diet wil not restore normal thyroid hormone levels. I have hypothyroidism and have been taking levothyroxine (Levoxyl) for many years. I've been I the Zone for 17-18 years. I , too have a long history of medication hyper-reactions, including reactions such as you describe to your thyroid med, but none seem to ever have had any connectin to how or what I'm rating. The Zone diet is an excellent choice. Good luck with it! |

Gosh, I feel lucky you replied i have read many of your post and appreciate your knowledge. I would like to ask you then about fish oil. Since I am reactive hypoglycemic, just about anything can make my blood sugar low. Im doing better on zone, but Im still working out meals that work best for me. Sometimes the wrong combinations of foods I can get low; I have removed all unfavorable carbs though! And I have to eat all my foods in 2 blocks throughout the day. I really want to add fish oil but Im afraid to because I don't want to get a rapid blood sugar drop and I know you had a lot trials and tribulations with added fish oil. Any thoughts?:D |

My doctor, who recommended the Zone, did tell me that the Zone diet can help improve my thyroid functioning. I'm also on thyroid medication. I get my T3 and T4 checked every 4 months or so. I also listen to my body for signs of hyperthyroidism and adjust my dosage myself (using the lessons given to me by my doctor). I think rather than relying on us lay-people, with varying experiences and opinions, you should probably discuss this with your doctor, especially given your history of having such a strong reaction to hyperthyroidism. |

Yes, thanks, I do get my bloodwork done every 4 months unless everything is going smoothly I can wait for 6 months. I just wondered if anyone had any personal experiences with noticable changes so I could be more attentive is something felt off. I don't go to the other doctor anymore........thankfully.
