    Hey, Laurie!

We are digging out after a snowstorm this weekend.  Our family was up north 2 1/2 hours  from home when it hit, so we had to drive home in the aftermath yesterday.  NOT FUN!

I had a good zoned meal (breakfast) prior to departure.  We stopped 1/2 way to grab some snacks, and I found a pear and some string cheese to munch on, to stay in the Zone.

It is less than 2 weeks before Christmas, and all of the Christmas goodies are starting to show up at work and all over the place!  It is difficult to abstain.  No matter how much I tell myself that the goodies are not doing me any good, they still taste great!  So, I am consciously working hard at this.  I am not going to say NO to it all entirely, but it is really a matter of moderation.  I find that if I totally abstain, I finally do end up "breaking down" and then it is a total diet disaster.  So, by going a little easier on myself, I think I can avoid the "all or nothing" attitude.

Every year, the medical staff sends out baskets filled with goodies to the nursing staff.  The baskets arrived today.  Really, they aren't that bad.  Lots of fruit-apples, oranges, pears, and bananas.  Some pretzels, triscuit crackers, cheese, nuts, and a bag of the Hershey Nuggets.  I think I can handle this, and it isn't a total blow-out if I have a little each day--I could really incorporate some of it into my afternoon snack.  My basket is shared by a few staff members, so I am sure someone else will help themselves to the less favorable stuff!  Usually it is the fruit that gets left behind, but I can take care of that!

    Hi Cran and Sue,

Yep, we just had our Holiday pot-luck luncheon (thank goodness turkey and salad are always a staple at those), and this week is "Goodies Week", where we each bring in a breakfast, lunch or snack food on an assigned day -- so there are literally tables filled with food in our department hallway all week.

An odd thing about me is that I'm a "closet eater" -- so food at work is never a temptation. But if I have it at home, after dinner -- watch out ! Knowing that, I have to be very careful to eat enough and stay in the Zone during the day AND make sure my house has no temptations that "call me" at night. I'm also making sure I drink plenty of water (started to slack on that), and get enough sleep -- it's like I have to stack the cards as best I can during the day, in order to prevent those cravings at night!

I'm still working on getting the few pounds off that I put on over the summer -- believe it or not, my personal challenge to myself is to get the weight off by Jan 1. Actually, the holiday season is easier for me to stay on track, because there's so much going on -- keeps me out of the house and away from the fridge!

I just have to say that it's encouraging to a Zone newbie to see people on here who have been Zoning for a long time, had great results, are dedicated and passionate about it...and still are tempted by food that takes them out of the Zone! It doesn't make me feel so bad about when those temptations come my way! I'm not alone...

I have a slightly different take on goodies.  I rarely eat them, and when I do, it's usually a taste or two.  When I do choose to eat them, there's no guilt; it was my choice.  The biggest reasons  I pass on them me are are the knowledge of what these foods do to my long term health and the sick feeling they give me afterward.  Not to be a big downer here, but I've experienced first hand the detrimental things these foods did to me.  Lucikly I've been able to turn that around.  I've also seen what they've done, and are still doing, to my friends and extended family, and it's very sad indeed.  As I see it, my life is at stake.   When it comes to goodies, itt's simply not worth it to me to take more than a bite or two.  I don't feel deprived, and believe me, I used to eat goodies with the best of them, lol. I didn't get to weigh in the mid 200's eating veggies! There's something else that has changed things for me too,  Zone 1-2-3 foods.  They've made goodies even less temtping than ever.  Thanks to them I can eat cookies, brownies, cinnamon bread and buns, etc. every day, not feel sick afterward, and  improve my health at the same time.

    Happy eating!

Jen, I guess that just goes to show that we are all human, and we are all not created perfectly!  I believe in the Zone and strive to live in the Zone, but I am NOT always a perfect Zone Angel!

I always take the knowledge with me that the goodies are NOT good for me, but I guess it just doesn't always work for me to stop the behavior.  Sweets and other goodies definitely DO NOT make me feel good in the long run, and I know that they can be detrimental to my healt; but I believe that the "immediate gratification" sometimes takes over and I can't stop.  And, I have to be careful with the small nibbles--I have a hard time stopping after a few bites or tastes.

My plan for the holidays is to coast through these weeks leading up to Christmas by practicing avoidance of the REALLY bad stuff.  Allow a few  indulgences here and there, then I won't feel deprived.  The day(s) that we celebrate with family will probably be the days that I won't worry so much about it, leave the guilt behind.  Then, when the holiday is over, get back to business.

I've been back in the zone for about 3.5 weeks now... I feel so good! I'm back at the gym regularly and eating very well. I too am a little nervous about the holiday treats showing up. I've managed to avoid most of it so far, but it won't be long before one of my old "favourites" confronts me, I'm sure! It's a journey!

Great job xee! The stress of the holidays is so much easier to handle when I'm in the Zone -- now, I just have to keep reminding myself of that when I'm tempted by my old "favorites" as well !

HI, my name is Bob in Miami.  This morning, Tuesday, I woke up and the temperature is 35 degrees.  I have been doing the Zone diet for about 8 months and have had good success.  I have more success during the week, during the day, when I am at work than on the weekends when I am out of my routine.  It's also in the evenings when I come home that I struggle with eating.  After dinner,  I can't seem to get back to being satisfied.  I think the stress of being with my wife and three kids my be affecting my eating.  I have had a question that I would like to ask.  I was wondering if there is a particular vinegar that is recommended over another that I can put on my salads.  I usually use the Progresso brand balsamic vinegar.  Any thoughts on this.  A friend who is familiar with the Zone recommended Tarragon vinegar.  Thanks

    Hi Robert,

You've got a nice warm day there!  (it's 17 degrees at my house in CT).

Other than watching out for vinegars with added carbohydrates, you can use any vinegar you like in your Zone meals.

A tip for evening munchies, from Dr. Sears in TOXIC FAT, taking Omega Rx with the evening meal will help.  If I remember correctly the amount to take for this is 5 grams.

    Keep up the good work!

Hi Robert -- I'm in Tampa, and we've hit the freezing point -- spent an hour last night covering my plants and flowers, hopefully they'll make it through!

I also struggle with evening eating. As much as a love my kids, there is undoubtedly added stress when we're all together. The kids are very good -- it's not behavior problems, but more of all the little details I have to take care of. The stress of keeping on top of all of that, plus work, etc. -- food becomes an "outlet" and a distraction from my "to-do's".

It was only 3 degrees above zero here (Wisconsin).  Maybe we reach 12-13 this afternoon, but it is still very cold.   The wind chill was about 20 below zero when I sent the kids off to school--all bundled up!  I changed my profile pic to a picture that we took during the summer, just to remind me of how warm it was!

I don't think that there is anything out there to suggest that vinegar is effective for weight loss.  Some say that apple cider vinegar curbs appetite, but there is no real evidence to back it up.   But, any vinegar is a good addition to a meal, as long as there's not a lot of sweetener or carbs added to it.

Hello, my friends - wonderful posts, as always. I so appreciate the honesty that you all share because it really does help those of us that are new.

My biggest challenge this week is just life. I'm a stress eater which is one of the things I've been so astonished with as far as my success during the last couple of months with my parents being ill and being away from home. I was able to come home for good this past Friday and promptly started packing on Saturday for our move this upcoming weekend. With all the chaos I'm just trying to take one day at a time.

Since one of my past problems has been throwing in the towel when I can't be perfect I'm just trying to give myself some grace, try my best each day and keep my eye on the big prize - continued good health. I'll let you know how that works for me! LOL

Hi everyone, I woke up this morning and thought about you, so I'm stopping in.

I'm solidly in the Zone for a long while now, and feeling great.

I'm impressed by Steven's recent picture- did you get lighter? Looks good.

I tried an experiment a few months ago, switching to whole fat milk products, eating more cheese, and cooking more red meat -- basically adding saturated fat back into my diet -- I did this because I wanted even greater satiety after my meals, and those high fat foods, I thought, would help. Also, I was being told my many around me that I appeared underweight (I'm still 135 at 5'7"), and I thought the higher testosterone meat products (such as beef) would help with muscular recovery from workouts.

Anyway, I did that for a couple months, and to tell you the truth, the only real result I got from it was an inability to drop weight, because the high levels of fat acted as a sort of caloric ballast (I believe that's the phrase Dr. Sears used in 'Mastering the Zone' in describing higher-fat diets,) and my waistline grew a half inch.

Keep in mind I was still only having 4 oz of protein with each full meal, so it was never an enormous amount of calories, but still, there were more, as you could compare whole milk to nonfat milk and see the difference right there.

Anyway, I have the goal of dropping that 1/2 inch off my waist-- perfectionist that I am-- so I'm not doing anything different from the diet (same amount of blocks) or exercise (same moderate workouts), but I'm going back to the recommended levels of unsaturated fats.

I've only done it for a day, but already the numbers are moving in the right direction.

Hope everyone is doing well! Ho Ho Ho.

Not a bad choice to switch back. I think that the higher fat/saturated fat foods have their place, but probably better to "moderate" them. Thinking in terms of anti-inflammation, the idea behind picking lower fat proteins and using mono-fats is to reduce the AA content of your foods. Obviously the caloric difference is a big bonus!

    Hi Ivan;

We haven't watched (YET) that show you're in (Undercovers?) - but have recorded every one, and waiting for the 8th episode.
