    Hi All:
I am a 43 yo married (21 years!) mom of three, ages 20-17-11 and I live in NYC.

I am epilptic, (adolescent onset) taking Depakote to manage my seizures since 1983.  One of Depakote's unfortunate side effects is what it does to one's liver and mine is no exception.  I have developed non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, (NAFLD), because of it, which makes it difficult to lose weight. Additionally, I was diagnosed on Friday, 11-12-10 with Hashimoto's Disease and placed on 25mcg of Synthroid daily.

Of course then, there is my weight. I am 5'1" tall and weigh in at a hefty 172.  Having had my non-functioning gallbladder out in January, I find fatty foods to be all but intolerable, so I avoid them like the plague. Also, I walk 3-5 miles almost daily at a quick clip.  Unfortunately, none of this has helped me in any way and quite frankly it's getting kind of depressing/frustrating.

I know I just unloaded a boatload of conditions, but is there ANYONE out there with a similar situation? Has anyone else had any success with reversing NAFLD while on Zone or lost significant weight in spite of a Hashimoto's diagnosis? Any help/advice would be deeply appreciated.

    Thanks so much:
    Denise

    Welcome Denise!

I have Hashimoto's and I've been very successful with losing weight in the Zone. I take 125 mcg Levoxyl, same drug as Synthroid, just a different brand.   I started the Zone almost sixteen years ago and it changed the path of my life.  I lost 100 pounds during the first two years, down to my ideal weight range and body fat%, and I have maintained it ever since.  In addition, I dropped a bit more of my stored fat when I switched from classic Zone meals to the ZoneFast 1-2-3 plan one year ago this month.  I also used to have high triglycerides, high cholesterol, plus I had high blood pressure that was not responding well to high BP meds (I was on two high BP meds back then).    I'm happy to say I no longer have high BP (that's without any BP meds; haven't needed them for many years) and my triglycerides and cholesterol lowered to excellent levels (without meds).

My advice for starting the Zone is to choose the method you’re most comfortable with (easiest is either ZoneFast 1-2-3 or the plate dividing method) and to pay close attention to blood sugar control and to the types of fats you choose.  The less Omega 6 fat and AA you consume, the better your results will be.  The key to your success will be on how well you control inflammation and insulin.  You can read TOXIC FAT, by Barry Sears, to find out more.

I’ll be happy to help I you have questions!

    AA: ?
    Omega 6: examples?

Happily, my BP has always been right on target despite my excessive weight.

Second, back in July when my bloods were first drawn showing elevated T4, my total cholesterol was also 213. After 3 months of CoQ-10, Zone Omega 3, and other supplements as well as adding ground flaxseeds to my morning bowl of cereal, it has plummeted to 183. :o)

I am not sure if there is anything that you can do about the depakote, other than to see if you can get on to another medication--but that is something that you definitely have to talk to your doctor about.  If you are not seeing an endocrinologist, it might be a good idea to talk to one.

You will want to follow the Zone as best as you can.  I don't know what that means for you in terms of your fat intakes, since fat is one piece of the puzzle that moderates glycemic response.  You will want to work on a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, preferably those that are "favorable" in the Zone, for best glycemic control.  I usually recommend whole foods, stay away from processed or manufactured foods.

I am close to you in age and height, as well as have 3 children (although younger than yours).  When I first started  the Zone, I was up there in the 170's, too, so I can relate!  I don't have the conditions that you have, but I have found it difficult to achieve results without really strict adherence to the diet portion of the Zone.

Examples of foods rich in AA: egg yolk, organ meats.  The fat in poultry, fish and animal products contain AA, so it’s important to choose the very lean animal proteins.  Even boneless, skinless chicken breast will contain some AA.

Omega 6 is fat occurs in both animal and plant sources.  It’s especially important to limit and avoid most vegetable and seed oils, which are predominately omega 6 fats.

Some examples of common oils to avoid in the Zone are soy oil, flax seed oil, safflower oil, corn oil, generic vegetable oil, walnut oil and sunflower oil.

It’s all explained in TOXIC FAT, the book I mentioned here eariler.

Here’s some helpful info about AA, Omega 6, and Eicosanoids, from the Glossary page of this site (http://www.zonediet.com/RESOURCES/G...ault.aspx)

    Arachidonic Acid (AA)

This is the 20-carbon length long-chain omega-6 fatty acid that is the immediate precursor of many eicosanoids that increase inflammation. Egg yolks, fatty red meat, and organ meats are rich sources of arachidonic acid.

    Omega-6 Fatty Acids

The type of polyunsaturated fatty acids found in protein and most seed oils. This type of fat can generate both "good" and "bad" eicosanoids.

    Eicosanoids

Eicosanoids are hormones derived from 20-carbon essential fatty acids. These fatty acids are AA, DGLA, and EPA. These hormones control inflammation. It is balance of eicosanoids that comes from long-chain omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acids that ultimately determines a person’s state of wellness. The 1982 Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded for understanding the role of eicosanoids in human disease.

Kay: So are you saying that the addition of flaxseeds to my diet is NOT good?

    Thanks for your help!

Hi, it's Sue here.  I think you meant to address the flax seed question to me, so I'll reply.  Barry Sears has explained that if you choose to consume flax oil, it should be used in modertaion, and also, that it would be OK to sprinkle a little flax seed over you foods if desired.  It's simply not the best fat for the Zone.
