I haven't been lurking the boards for a while as I've been trying to figure out what the heck is wrong w/me....turns out I have adrenal exhaustion - to the point where a workout/walk/hike, etc. would give me flu-like symptoms. Anyone else experienced this? If so, have you made any adjustments to your Zone diet? Thx.

    Hi Kelly,

I have Hashimoto's and the opposite adrenal concern.  I have normal functioning adrenal glands but I tend to produce too much adrenalin, even in response to my thyrpioid hormone med, which can end up leaving you feeling fatigued and other things.  I've been practicing strict adherence to the Zone diet for many years and I have not changed to address the thyroid and adrenal concerns.  I've had very good results working with an endocrinologist who combines traditional medicine with complimentary alternative medicine.  My treatment includes supplementing withherbal adaptogens to normalize adrenal function, plus higher then average doses of magnesuim.

If you have Hashimotos you may also be making anti-bodies against adrenal glands - have you had that tested too?

I have Hashimotos, however I am not on meds, I am following Dr Datis Kharrazians protocol (the Thyroid book) He talks about the importance of treating it as an auto-immune disease and taking out auto-immune triggers - primarily gluten. google gluten and hashimotos - there is a strong link. He writes about all the problems associated with thyroid issues and how to address them. Good to work with a good endo or holistic doctor though.

I am strict gluten free, follow anti-auto immune guidelines (paleo / zone plus fish oil, vit D) and so far I have managed to keep all my auto-immune issues at bay and my thyroid anti-bodies are dropping.

Hi Julianne, I am also considering this protocol; would you mind telling me how long it took (in your case) and what were some of the steps - was it only gluten free or was there more to it? Thanks Debbie

    Hi,
I've been following the Zone diet for 14 years. I decided to try paleo eating (grain, legume, dairy free) 18 months ago as some issues would come and go like joint inflammation and PMS, and I needed a lot of fish oil to help. After reading about how grains legumes and dairy contribute to auto-immune issues I decided to completely cut these foods out - not that hard really when already eating zone which doesn't have much anyway.

I was the key to getting rid of the joint problems, and I now understood why some months they were worse than others, it depended on the amount of grains etc I'd been eating. I've been symptom free for 18 months now, and don't need huge amounts of fish oil any more.

I discovered I had Hashimotos just over a year ago - in a general checkup. I don't have symptoms, but do have high antibodies and borderline hypothyroid measures. I have not needed meds. I started researching to see what I could do - which is when I cam across Dr K's book. It just made sense. And as a test - I stayed strict gluten free (I was having a few cheats prior) and then had my anti-bodies retested and they had decreased.

I take the basic supplement recommendations, omega 3, vitamin D, selenium. Sleep 8 hours a night and do intense exercise 2 -3 times week. All help

    Julianne,
Thx for the information - it supports what I have been reading and taking into consideration. I am under a doctor's care and waiting for my 2nd round of blood work to come through (fingers crossed). I'm going to try gluten free then move on the dairy free. Wish me luck!
