I'm a newbie to this zone forum but not to the Zone diet. I discovered Mastering the Zone back in 2000. But it was a library copy. After having to kids and moving to the US, I tried weight watches but was hungry all the time and could not maintain the weight-loss. Now I am turning back to the Zone diet! But I also love to run so... I was wondering how many people run and eat a zone diet. Also how they do it. Do you add more blocks? If their times improved etc...

Utilize the calculator on this site to determine you protein requirements. http://www.drsears.com/ZoneResource...fault.aspx

You may want to split your requirements around your work out. You want to fuel your body with a balanced snack before and after your exercise. Have a 1 block snack 1/2 hour before your work out and a 1block snack right away after your workout.

    Hi Megan,

The Zone is excellent for running. Most of my family runs and we're Zoners. My husband and 2 adult daughters have run marathons, and one of my daughters also does the Hood to Coast, all without carb loading, and they don't use high carbohydrate gels, drinks or snacks for trainging or at events.

is a Zone forum member frn Belgium who runs marathons. She has excellent times, which have improved with the Zone (3:17 in the NYC Marathon last year, if I remember right) and has posted here about it. Here's one of her threads: http://www.zonediet.com/Community/F...fault.aspx

You can find more by searching for her posts with the username ADELA00 (those are zeros at the end, not o's).

    Good luck!

    Megan,

I was a cross country runner in high school and have been a runner ever since and I think you'll see a huge difference in your running performance on the zone. When I first started running in high school I was on a weight watchers type of diet and felt like I had zero energy or strength while I was running and usually started out feeling starving and then ended up feeling completely nauseated and gray. However, when I started eating in the zone, my energy, strength, and running time improved dramatically. Currently, I'm a bit patchy about my running schedule (some days I just walk on my treadmill rather than run) but I get running in about 4 out of 7 days and run anywhere from 1- 4 miles on the days that I run (mostly it's around 1-2 miles). However, I should also note that I'm fairly relaxed about my exercise routine and don't make myself run when I don't want to but even then, the weight stays off- you just might not lose any additional weight as quickly- but even then you'll still lose if you're following the food part of the zone.

    Hello Zoners,

I was wondering if you have advice for the best way to lose weight on the zone while training for endurance sports. I started the zone 1.5 years ago, but I've been off it for the past 3 months. I've just been able to get back into it last week, and I'm also putting in a lot of x-c ski training hours. I'm rollerskiing, x-c skiing on wheels, anywhere from 10-15 hours/week, on average 2 hour/day on a training program. Do you recommend any fat-burning exercises that I can incorporate into my fitness routine? I'm very fit and active, and I only want to lose 10lbs of extra body fat that I've gained in the past few months. Since I only have a little to lose, and I'm working out a lot, is there anything I can do to accelerate fat-buring?

In terms of eating in the zone, I'm doing a good job measuring all of my blocks outs (eating 12/day according to the block calculator). I think I might need more blocks though because I have been hungry going to bed this past week even though I eat a balanced 1-block snack (usually 1 ounce of low fat string cheese, 1/2 tsp of PB, and 1/2 apple) about 30 min. before I go to bed. I was thinking that it could just be that my body is still getting used to getting back in the zone and taking in less calories than I had been. I was also thinking of starting to take my fish oil after dinner instead of at breakfast. I normally take 5000mg, or 5 softgels. I was also thinking that I might be more sensitive to fruit carbs. I probably eat more fruit than I should, although I still eat lot's of veggies, and I was wondering if I should try decreasing my fruit carb intake. Any ideas about how I might want to tweak my zone diet due to the amount of exercise I am doing?? Any help/ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    mckayla,

The best way to lose excess stored body fat in the Zone is to eat the number of blocks recommended by the calculator (use the "Very Active" level), eat most of your carbohydrates in the form of favorable veggies, and practice strict adherence to the Zone diet.   You might consider the Zone 1-2-3 plan (with the Zone pizza, bagels, pasta etc.).   It's excellent for athletes and all individuals.  Be sure to add sufficient protein to fulfill your daily protein requirement.  Since you're technically beginning a diet again, your Omega Rx dose recommendation would be 5g.  That's 5g of EPA plus DHA, not to be confused with 5 grams of total fish oil.  For the 5g dose of Omega Rx 8 you would take capsules daily.

    McKayla,

Best approach is to adhere to the Zone guidelines the best that you can.  Definitely check out your block requirement, as it sounds like you could use a few extra blocks (but I don't know your stats, so I can't really say for sure).  I am not sure you would want to increase your fish oil as Sue recommended, at least not without knowing your stats.  You state that you want to lose 10# but I don't know if you are overweight, or just desiring to have less bodyfat??

I don't think that there is anything that will "accelerate" fat burning.  You should burn 1-2# per week, but your body really can't burn faster than that.  If you are losing faster, it is likely that you are losing more than just fat--which you don't want.  In fact, if you are working out, you may not notice any change in the scale, so my best advice is to keep track of your stats (measurements, bodyfat# and % per the calculator on this site).

If you are feeling hungry, you may need to adjust your blocks, or it might help to take your fish oil at that later time, as you suggested.  And, cutting back on fruit to 1-2 blocks per day will help.

    Hope that is helpful!
