Thanks for keeping this thread going Laurie! So far this week my only Zone challenge has been trying to figure out how much Zone food to order for my house, and how much to have sent to my daughter's where we'll be spending a lot of time this month (not much of a challenge ). My next little challenge will come when I meet friends at a restaurant later today. Luckily, that won't be much of a challenge either, because the restaurant we chose, Burton's Grill, has lots of things on their menu that quickly become very Zone friendly when you eliminate, or go very light on, the bread and starchy carbohydrates. I'll post later to let you know what I ordered. Have a great week! |

After doing kayaking on Saturday (only 7.5 miles, but windy on first half of trip) and then bicycling 18 miles on Sunday, we went to dinner at one of our favorite local restaurants. The waitress forgot to bring the basket of bread, so we did not need to refuse it. I noticed that they have some new added menu selections, including flatbread sandwhiches with 6 net carbs. They actually list that on the menu. Their food is always freshly made. The salmon is wild and not farm-raised, and the prices are really really reasonable. One of the reasons we go there, though we only eat out about once per month. . We skipped the usual one glass of red wine this trip, as well. All-in-all it was a good weekend. And despite the fact that eating out usually adds 1/2 to 1 pound the next morning since we use it as the the occasion for a little guilt-free indulgence, and we did so this time as well by splitting one desert between us. This time, I managed to maintain as desired. |

Sue, if it is too much trouble to figure out how much food to order and how much food to ship to your daughter's, I wonder if it would be easier for you to just eat regular food? That way, you won't have to bother yourself with all of that pre-planning!
I had a nice weekend, too! We drove up to the northern part of the state where the colors are blossoming very nicely! Took a nice country drive, and found a few county parks with hiking trails. One park was located on a river and had a trail which led to a waterfall.
After our waterfall hike, we drove back to a restaurant that we had never been to before. My dad had given us a gift certificate, so we used it there. I had no trouble at all choosing a zoned meal. Scallops (broiled), with a cup of white bean chili and asparagus spears. It was delicious! I am glad that I didn't have to rely on zone products to get me through the dinner, either, because those scallops were so yummy--they literally melted in my mouth!
That is one thing that I really love, trying out new places, enjoying the food. It would not be quite as enjoyable if I had to wind my dinner around a zone bread product.
On Sunday, I had a lot of work to do (reports and such), so spent the morning working on that before we headed back home. Well, I guess we screwed up on our timing! As it was, the Packer game had finished up as we were headed into Green Bay! YIKES! The traffic was terrible! If I had thought of it sooner, I would have taken an exit earlier and enjoyed a drive home on secondary roads (even though it would have taken longer on a regular day, I am sure I would have made good time yesterday, and the scenery would have been better). |

Hi Everyone,
I posted earlier today that I'd get back to you about what I ate at the restaurant. I chose lightly seared sesame seed crusted tuna steak, sliced and accompanied by the usual pickled ginger and wasabi plus a delicious ponzu sauce for dipping (a citrus flavored soy sauce). The tuna was arranged around a very generously sized serving of spicy cucumber and pepper salad. I ordered an additional side of the cucumber salad to round out the rest of my carbohydrates. I was surprised when it turned out to be an even larger portion than the meal contained, so I had some of it wrapped to bring home. It was delicious!

LOL!
Sounds like a nice meal... I am impressed, you didn't throw ANY zone 1-2-3 product in there at all! See, you CAN do it! |

My challenge for this week (and for the last couple of weeks) is to remember to take my fish oil. I keep forgetting about it. Also, I've gained one pound...not sure why. Maybe it's the ice cream I had last night. |

Hi Anna, I put my fish oil capsules in one of those little supplement holders with compartment for each day of the week, and then store it with the things I use for breakfast. It helps me remember. Try not to focus too much on the one pound fluctuation. It could be perfectly normal whether or not you ate ice cream. ____________________________________________

Quick question. I started doing 2 hours of classes at my local gym which varies, some day is cario mixed with weights, some days zumba mixed with more cardio. I plan on doing this every day except friday and sunday. Which fitness group would this fall into? Yesterday was my first day of doing this, and had to eat an additional snack before bedtime because I was absolutly starving. I woke up fine though and had to force myself to eat breakfast. I just finished my 2 workouts about an hour ago, had lunch.. and I feel fine, but I just wonder if I might need an extra block since i'm doing more workouts. Thanks |

Rebecca, use "Active" in the calculator and go with that block recommendation. It's very important to eat the amount of protein needed for your LBM and activity level, to prevent loss of LBM. If you find you are lacking energy when you are eating at your appropriate block recommendation, you would then add a little extra monounsaturated fat to your meals (try doubling the F blocks). It will not be enough fat to prevent the loss of stored fat.
A tip, 2 hours of workouts back to back will raise cortisol levels, which will take you in the direction away from the Zone (elevated inflammation). It would be better to split the workouts into 2 1-hour sessions at different times of day. If you don't split it up, at least eat a Zone balanced snack after the first hour of exercise. It will give you a better shot at lessening the cortisol elevation. Elevated cortisol can keep a person out of Zone. Also, regardless of the amount of exercise you do, you should lose 1 to 1.5 pounds of stored fat per week in the Zone.

My challenge this week is to try and get down to 200lbs even! a few days ago I weighed 202.4 and this morning still 203.4, but it's so close I can feel it won't be long now. And I know with enough time, I'll look back at 200 like I look back at 224 now, a milestone along the way to my ultimate goal.
My challenges also include trying to get more consistent rest & sleep, staying out of the gym on my 3 "rest days" as I'm trying to adapt to a four day weights routine with cardio on a 5th day. And lastly, I'll finally get a chance to work in Brownies as my ZoneFast should get here soon with the new additions, very well welcomed at this time! |

Thank you Sue. I currently take the liquid fish oil and hence keep it in the fridge so that is why I keep forgetting to take it. As soon as I finish the bottle I am switching to caps and that way will remember to take it with my Vit D. I had maintained my loss of 7 pounds for so long so that is why I was wondering why the 1 pound gain but I will try not to focus on it too much. It will be gone by the end of the week for sure. Now that Steven mentioned sleep..I too will try to snooze in more hours...6 or 7 hours don't seems to be enough. I was very unhappy with the fact that I did not have any time to excercise but I got a dog 3 weeks ago and now I take him out for a walk every morning and evening so that is how I manage to fit it about 45 to 60 min walk in every day. Yay! |

Hi everyone, Thought I would ask a couple of more questions although I am sure the answers are right here. What happened to the chart which tells you what foods are favorable carb zone foods and unfavorable ones? Where do figs fall? I have been going to the health food store looking for snacks. I love the zone cookies but sometimes want other foods. Any other suggestions. Also, I bought groat oats which Cranberrycat is always talking about and since I have never eaten them before I thought I would ask how you prepare them? The clerk suggested I soak them overnight in water and then cook them for 15 minutes the next day. Does that sound right? Also, do you put milk in them usually? Thanks for any help. |

Anna, I sometimes forget to take my fish oil, too. But, it was easy to remember when I was adding it to my breakfast smoothie, just like tossing in all of the other ingredients. I switched to caps in the spring, as I had anticipated being gone a lot on weekends. So, I keep the caps right by my Calcium and Vitamin D. |

Margaret, I cook them the same as I cook steel cut oats, about 1 cup groats to 3-4 cups boiling water. Boil water, then add the oat groats and simmer for 1/2 hour. I usually have to drain a bit of excess water off, so I strain them in the strainer when finished cooking. I use them in some of my salads, and so I don't happen to put milk on them. But, you could if you wanted to (just make sure you balance everything out). |

working on rest lol, i thought I'd ad something very interesting as of late. I've been eating very differently than conventional zone, with a concentration of protein uptake around my workouts nearly equalling 9 blocks total before, during and after. As a result, on days like today where I worked out for 2.5hrs on Legs, I ate 27 blocks of protein but 20 blocks of carbs and 20 blocks of fats. My hunger is very managed because I'm always full lol, yet I continue to lose weight about 2lbs per week. The work outs and eating are really working synergystically now along with a supplement regime to support LBM gains. I've aditionally found that I'm much more tolerable to white foods again. On Saturday, I had cornbread and white rice with red beans and cake, and didn't really have any issues that afternoon or the next day. My insulin resistance is gone, but I eat right 95% of the time. Today though, to mix it up a bit, I got a grilled chicken sandwich on white bread from Chick-fil-a and as it turns out, it kept me full for 3.5+ hours until I ate my ZoneFast bedtime cookies. I don't plan on binging, but I am tolerable to mix it up here and there. I really feel like being in the zone for 4 months has healed me and my insulin is completely under control. My Body Fat has dropped from 40% to 25% and my BMI is now 29.2 and falling fast. And my shape has changed. The angled back of healthy athletic male form is now quickly replacing the beer gut of yesteryear. Sometimes it's important to appreciate and normalize; this is no longer a diet. This is who I am now People tell me every day that I"m a different person now, both physically and personality wise. Amazing! BTW, I'm on Krill Oil as of this week from Swanson in addition to Omapure. I take 3 caps of Krill and 3 caps of Omapure and my regularitiy has improved! Go figure... anyone else on Krill? |

Thanks for sharing, Steve! I think your enthusiasm is infectious!
Hey, just go easy on the "white foods"! Now, one meal may not throw you off, but sometimes this happens to me... then I get a false sense of security in that if I tolerated it once, I should be fine as long as I don't do it more often... but then it DOES begin to happen more often, and I get myself into trouble. So, my point is, stick with what has worked for you, and DON'T look back!
But, as far as your protein needs, I think you are doing just fine with that. It almost sounds like perhaps your body needs it, since you are continuing to lose fat and gain LBM. I don't know how that measures up to what the bodyfat calculator suggests, but sometimes we just have to toss out the calculator and go with what is working.
I AM jealous--I just love cornbread, but I must keep that to a rare occasion! |

Steven, to add my two cents, don't forget about inflammation lowering. You may gain some new perspective by reading more about the Zone. Here's a quote from Dr. Sears about krill oil: "It is impossible to remove toxins such as PCBs or dioxins from krill oil." You can find this in it's entire context here: http://www.drsears.com/SearchResult...=krill+oil____________________________________________

Hey everyone! I thought I'd stop in and see how this group is doing. From the looks of it, just fine.
Busy living life in the Zone--eating balanced meals, and staying away from sugary trigger foods.
I've been wrapped up in my acting career, shooting a co-star on NBC's Undercovers (look for me in the eight episode of season one as the despondent Russian bartender- I only speak in one scene, but it's a good one) and rehearsing Night of January 16th, a play by Ayn Rand that runs at the Odyssey Theater in Los Angeles in October and November 2010.
I've been packing Zone meals, such as mixed protein salads, which has helped with my concentration and performance.
Best wishes to all of you!

I have just started the Zone Lifestyle and am a bit unsure how much fish oil I should take.
According to the book I should take 10 grams a day. Is that EPA and DHA added togehter, seperate or is it the total Omega-3?,
The liquid fish oil I am taking (got the brand from ifosprogram.com) has in one teaspoon:
EPA - 1626 mg DHA - 1226 mg Other Omega-3 - 450 Total Omega-3 of 3202
So should I be taking 3 teaspoons, 3.5 teaspoons, or a little more than 8 teaspoons?
Thanks! Lynda |

Total EPA & DHA. So 1 tsp is 1852 mg of total or nearly 2 grams. 10 grams would be exactly 5.40 tsp or about 5-1/2 tsp per day.
