     Hello everybody!

I have a question and I couldn't find an answer searching online so I thought I'll post it here: Does it matter the order of the foods we aet at 1 meal?

Should I eat 1st the Carbs and the Protien and then the Fats or it doesn't matter? I'm asking this just because I wonder while I'm eating the carbs 1st does my insulin gets too high too quick? Should I combine every bite of carbs with Protein or Fat? Thank you for all the support I'm finding here. Zone Diet's forum is one of the friendliest I've known.

Christina, that's an excellent question to ask, and I happen to know the answer. Dr. Sears has explained in his books that it would be better to start the meal with the protein food, specifically to aid in insulin control. Of course, if your P,C and F is combined in one dish, you wouldn't be able to eat the protein first, but in general it's best to begin with the protein.

It probably does not matter overall.  I think I have read that as long as all components of the meal are eaten within 30 min of each other, that you can stay in the Zone.

Personally, I would argue that if you eat your carbs first, that they could digest and send you OOZ.  Some people say that if you eat your protein first, that it stimulates a "fullness" or "satiety".

When possible, I follow Sears' advice, exactly as outlined by Sue. I used to eat my carbs first, having heard that this was better for digestion, which I now think was wrong. I definitely think that eating protein first is helping me to keep in the zone and reducing my appetite.

Here's some more info about the benefits of eating the protein first.  You can find it find it on page 56 of Mastering The Zone.  It's helpful  tip # 13 in Chapter 7 Adjusting Your Hormonal Carburetor.

    13.  Eat your protein portion first.  Since protein stimulates glucagon, this hormone will cause the release of stored carbohydrate in the liver to keep your brain satisfied, thereby making it easy to control the carbohydrate intake.  Furthermore, glucagon depresses insulin secretion, making protein your most powerful tool in controlling insulin levels.
