I'm going to be in the US next week, and thought I would use that opportunity to order a custom sample pack of Zone foods. Before I hit the "buy" button, I figured I'd get some feedback from those who already use it.

Do you have a favourite that you think I shouldn't pass up?

I won't have it absolutely fresh, since it will probably arrive before I get there, and I'll be there a week. Are there any foods that I should avoid because of the need for freshness?

It seems the site would really like me to use "autoship"! Obviously, since this is a one time visit, I wouldn't be able to use autoship in the true sense of the word. But it also says I can cancel whenever I want, no questions asked. True? Can I order once and then cancel the autoship, and save $14?

    Thanks for the feedback!

    Hi Xee,

Yes, you should be able to use autoship and change or cancel it whenever you want.  The favorites at my house are multigrain bread, both granolas, cinnamon swirl bread, multigrain bagels, cinnamon buns, orzo, chocoplate chip cookies, brownies and Heath bar cookies.  The breads buns and pizza crusts require refrigeration as soon as possible when they arrive, and the brownies could have freshness issues if you keep them too long (because of fressness issues the brownies aren't sold during summer months).  The rest is shelf stable for the amount of time you mentioned.    Enjoy!

Too bad about the refrigeration issues. Our hotel doesn't have a fridge in the room, so I guess any of the bread products and pizza crusts are out!

I also noticed that the peanut butter granola isn't listed in the custom package. Does anyone know why, and if I could get it in the custom package?

Hi Xee: CALL! When I used to travel a lot for business, many hotels did not have refrigerators in the rooms. HOWEVER, if you call ahead and ask, many have a few on hand for special requests. Though they will not put it in the room until you check-in, and you should remind them at check-in time that you requested a refrigerator. But call ahead and ask. You might get a refrigerator for your stay. It saves a ton of money eating out, an helped me wth staying in the Zone.

Well, I got my custom pack, here's what I think so far:

Garlic Bagel - dry, had an odd taste and the chopped up garlic was way too strong; I think it would be ok toasted with some low fat cream cheese, but I didn't have a toaster handy at the hotel

Cinnamon Roll - this was quite delicious! Moist and tasty, unlike the bagel. I would definitely have these again.

Half the bagel, half the roll (other halves were shared with my roommate), small piece of fruit and a cheese string kept me satisfied until lunch.

Took the rest back home with me.

Fusili pasta - I liked the taste and texture quite a bit. I used the whole package, forgetting it was 4 blocks. Added zucchini, onions, mushrooms and marinara sauce. Satisfying, though it's not a large meal by any means.

Cookies (I've tried so far the peanut chip, chocolate chunk and coconut chocolate chip) - I see what everyone is saying about them being sweet. I happen to quite like them. But I have to be honest and wonder how on earth they can be Zone friendly with all the chocolate in them. The cookies are literally chunks of chocolate held together by some dough. 1 cookie=1 block and they do not satisfy me for very long at all.

Original Granola - Much sweeter than I expected; it really doesn't need to be so sweet, especially if using it in yogurt as breakfast. I mixed it with mocha yogurt to make about 3 blocks. I was still really hungry, so I cooked up some green beans which helped.

Sesame Pretzel - dry, but a quick zap in the microwave helped with that. Had a peach and piece of cheese with it. Hungry an hour later.

So overall, it's nice to have some variety, but I'm not sure I could live full time on the pre-packaged food. It just doesn't seem like it's enough food--those gotta be some very dense carbs in there for that little amount of food. I'm used to feeling satisfied from mounds of broccoli with my meal.

I'm also skeptical about how sweet some of the things are. Even if it's Zone balanced, doesn't even artificial sweetener stimulate insulin?

I have yet to try to Orzo, Herb Pretzel and Peanut Butter granola.

    Hi Xee,

I'm glad it worked out well for you.  I love the cookies too.    I haven't had any trouble staying in the Zone with them, but I usually eat the whole package at a time.  I've read somewhere in the ZoneFast info that for the breads and rolls, it’s recommended to toast or put in the microwave very briefly, to freshen.  If you look at the Grocery additions page, you'll see that you can add lots of veggies to your ZoneFast meals.

I was away for 5 days over the past 2 weekends combined, and brought Zone foods with  both times.  It worked out very well.  There was a fridge in my room last weekend, though not the weekend before.  This past weekend we were attending a destination wedding that included 3 days of festivities.  I didn't have time to get to a store where we were staying, so I bought a huge deli turkey sandwich across the street from the hotel and used the meat, cheese and veggies in the sandwich to make several ZoneFast sandwiches over the following 3 days.  My breakfasts were Zone bagels and cinnamon rolls with cream cheese from the breakfast room at the hotel.  We ate Zone pretzels, granola and cookies for snacks.  My husband, also a zoner, did the same except he ate Zone granola for breakfast.  The rest of the time, which amounted to one meal a day we had Zone friendly meals at the reception and at restaurants.  My favorite meal was Friday night, roasted asparagus spears and goat cheese, wrapped in prociutto, with a balsamic vinegar reduction and basil chiffonade.  Oh wow, it was so good!  This was probably the best meal I've ever had in a restaurant.
