Hello all Zoners. I am on day 2 of starting The Zone health regimen. I am not trying lose wait, but am trying eat better and balance my body chemistry. I am 161 lbs, 5'8", 11% BF (according to online calculator), and I require 16 P blocks per day. I discovered the Zone diet from Dr. Daniel Amen's books on ADD and Anxiety. I am hoping through hormonal balance I can improve my Type 5 ADD and social anxiety. I plan on leaving more posts and will leave this one as an introduction.

Good luck! In Dr. Sear's Anti-Inflammation Zone book, he addressed ADHD as a neurological issue which can be combatted and improved via Fish Oil supplementation. He prescribed 10g of FO a day for people with really bad ADHD, but your own situation would need to be considered. Eating correctly is a great start, and ultimately, Fish Oil may be another great thing for you to try and overcome your Type 5 ADD.

Hi Joshua, nice to meet you. In addition to following the Zone diet, Omega Rx will be very important for you. Your dose will most likely be between 1 and 2 Tablespoons daily. My son's results with Omega RX have been amazing re his ADD. He was about 16 years old when he began taking it 9 years ago.

You can find out more here: http://www.drsears.com/SearchResult...earch=ADHD The info applies to ADD and ADHD.

Thanks for the info. I am 30 and never even thought about looking into diagnosis for ADD because I'm not hyperactive at all. Then after reading about the diff types, my symptoms fit around Unfocused and Limbic ADD which does not include hyperactivity. I am taking fish currently at 450/450 mg combo of EPA and DHA. Should I up the fish oil dosage?

    Hi,

Yes, you would need more than that to address ADD. 1 to 2 Tablespoons of Omega RX contains approximately about 8 to 16 grams of combined EPA and DHA. Dr. Sears' fish oil dosage recommendations are meant for an ultra-refined fish oil concentrate with a 60% concentration of EPA and DHA in a 2 to 1 ratio (400mg EPA and 200mg DHA in every 1000 mg of fish oil) that has attained the IFOS 5 star rating. This type of fish oil is not sold in stores. You can find more information about it here: http://www.zonediet.com/Shop/Omega-...rates.aspx

Also, I didn't mean to imply that results are related to age, but rather I meant to let you know I was not speaking about a small child when I mentioned my son.

Hello Joshua and nice to meet you! What brand fish oil you are taking now? You may want to check out this web site http://www.ifosprogram.com/IFOS/Con...eport.aspx to research other brands (besides Dr Sears') that are ultra refined Omega-3 products.

I am currently taking Nutrilite Ocean Essentials. I read through the Omega RX Zone book last night. Very very interesting. I then did some looking into my fish oil. It is pharmaceutical grade, no PCB or other dangerous "garbage of the sea" ingredients. I upped my dosage to 8 pills (each pill has the same EPA/dha ratio amount as Dr Sear's Omega RX). So I am taking 4800 mg total. I'll see how that effects me for about 2 weeks and then get the test the book said to get and adjust my dose based on that. One question I do have for anyone experienced taking high dosage is whether I should take all 8 pills at once or can I space them out throughout the day?

Joshua, it is really up to you.

I take all of my fish oil at once (I take 2 tsp of liquid fish oil, which is approximately the equivalent of 8 capsules). I do it this way so that I remember to take it all.

Others split it up and take with meals, or twice per day. There is no set rule.

Years back, I was having trouble taking all of that fish oil, but now I don't have any GI upset with it at all.

    Hi Joshua,

I just checked the IFOS 5 star reports and I don't see that fish oil on it. Without the 5 star rating for the batch number on your fish oil bottle, you cannot be sure the fish oil is safe to take in high doses. Dr. Sears usually recommends not to take more than 1000 mg of a fish oil batch that has not attained the IFOS 5 star rating.

There's no need to split fish oil dose. It can be taken all at once. It should be taken with a meal. Sea Health Plus taken with fish oil helps with fish oil absorption.

It takes 30 days to receive the full benefit of a fish oil dose. You would wait at least 30 days after starting fish oil, or after changing your dose of fish oil, to have the AA/EPA test done.

sue </div>Sue, I've been splitting in order to get an appetite suppression benefit. I don't know if that's working or not, and it would be easier to do it all at once, so do you think there's no appetite suppression benefit from FO? Also, I thought it might help with leveling out meals by adding just that much more fat to a meal

    Hi

No, just the opposite. I think it can suppress appetite under the set of circumstances that Dr. Sears describes in "Toxic Fat" (pages 145-146). His suggestions are that 5 g of fish oil (that's 8 capsules or 2 reaspoons) taken with a meal will probably suppress hunger for about 2 hours after that meal, and that people who have evening "munchies" try taking at least 5 g fish oil with dinner to prevent evening snacking. Splitting your dose throughout the day wouldn’t be same thing, unless your dose is of such a significant amount that splitting it still results in taking 5 grams, or more at a time.

Okay, I had forgotten that it was supposed to be 5 grams all together. I guess since I'm hungriest between lunch and dinner, I should move all my FO to lunch time and see how that works.

    Thanks, Sue.
