Bagels are listed under the category of high density carbohydrates to be used in moderation, to let you know they are not the best carbohydrates for the Zone diet.
Re "Balanced" and in "In-the-Zone" the meanings can differ depending on the context. A meal can be referred to as balanced and "in the Zone" because of the amount of protein, carbohydrate and fat it contains. A person can be described as being "in the Zone" based on their individual hormonal response to the meals and snacks they eat. To take it further, a meal can be "in the Zone" referring to it adhering to Zone balance, but it may not be the appropriate balance to keep a particular person in the Zone because that person may need a different protein to carbohydrate ration to stay in the Zone.
