SOOOO ready for this life change....

BUT, I'm a little fuzzy on reading labels....   for example I bought some whole wheat, high fiber tortillas that are 60 calories, 3grms fat, 5 grams of protein and 7 carbs .  My interpretation is:... this is 1/3rd F 5/7ths P and 1 C??????????   I'm a doing this right?  Or do i just count this as 1 C?

I'm sure labels have been addressed on these forums a thousand times.... so sorry for repeating

    Thanks

I guess you'd have to be more specific as to what kind of protein is in the tortillas.  Most vegetable proteins (from veggies and grain) are not counted in the Zone.  The protein is bound to the fiber and the fiber isn't digested, so much of the protein is not available.  Now, if protein was added to the tortilla, you may be able to count it.

In any case,  3g of fat is one complete fat block, and you are fairly close to one block of carb (unless you have some fiber to subtract).  I would count it as 1F and 1C, but if you have more than a few grams of fiber to subtract, then you might be looking at it being 1/2C.

Glen, here's the info for figuring out Zone blocks from nutrition labels.  One fully balanced block of P, C and F contains 7 grams of protein (disregard plant protein with the exception of soy), 9 grams of insulin stimulating carbohydrate (that's total carbohydrate minus total fiber), and 3 grams of fat.

I would call your tortilla 1C block. If there is a significant amount of soy listed on the ingredient label of the product you can call it .5 P, and 1C if you prefer; eating 1/2 P block extra now and then is insignificant. Regardless, it is unfavorable carbohydrate, which should be limited to not more than 25% of all the carbohydrate in a meal.  The 3 grams of fat is also insignificant. You can either count it toward the fat in the meal or disregard it altogether.

thanks so much ladies. I need to read through the book again. I started to get a little lost with a bit of the scientific stuff.

starting to make a bit more sense.

i suppose some of the idea is to eat whole/natural foods anyways and get away from reading labels on processed foods.

Actually that is an excellent point, Glen!  Most veggies don't come with nutrition labels!

You're welcome Glen.  To make it easy use the plade dividing method shown here:   http://www.zonediet.com/Tools/Quick...fault.aspx
It works great.  I lost 100 pounds with it.  Even easier is the 1-2-3 plan found in the WEIGHT LOSS tab above.
