    Hello Everyone,

I have been a member since 2007, but have never posted. The reason I began the Zone in the first place is my father is diabetic and this worked so effectively in lowering his insulin that he actually accidentally went into insulin shock and we had to call paramedics.  I have often read your posts and are very interested in what people have said on the forums.  It has been awhile since I've been on the forums, or bought anything from the zone (I had stocked up on protein bars) and other than that, I pretty much eat the same things day to day.

For breakfast: cottage cheese, fruit, and nuts; egg whites, oatmeal, turkey bacon.  For lunch usually chicken salad with 1 C coming from fruit; sometimes zone turkey chili; or the tuna stuffed tomatoes; then for dinner, I the zone turkey chili from a week in the zone; chicken and steamed vegetables. I just make up recipes picking and choosing blocks other than these, but these are what i eat a lot (like chili I'll make a batch for the week separate into containers, so they're ready to just heat up).  I really like the protein shakes and fruit/protein smoothies however; i find whether I'm drinking smoothies i make myself or the Zone protein shakes they always throw me off balance. I feel like I'm starving about 2 hours later.

The one thing I noticed is that many have jumped on bored with the zone fast 1-2-3 foods. When they first came out it wasn't something I was so much interested in, because I tend to be very sensitive to carbs and just by reading the information in the store I was not really sure how these foods worked combined with other foods to make these meals. This is something i am very interested in if someone could explain these a little better to me so I could understand them better? I go to school full time and just started p90x and want to make sure that I get back to eating healthy and eating enough.  I think eating some of the zone fast foods might be able to healthy because some days I'm at school 10 - 12 hours.

I do admit I have been off the zone since March, when I went into the hospital for a few weeks from being sick (103 fever etc). When I got out I was too weak to even make food and other ppl brought me pre cut up fruit and peanut butter and bagel thins and I lived off of this for like 3 weeks. Afterwards, I didn't go back to the zone (stupid me :/).  But now I intend to get back to eating right because over a 3 month period I gained 25 pounds which not only sucks for physical appearance but I have spine injuries as I was a competitive gymnast in my teens and this extra weight is putting pressure on my back, causing to me be in a lot more pain.

    Stats: 23 years old
    Current weight: 168.5
    Height: 5'2
Workout: p90x lean and Salsa 3 hours a week
Supplements: Vitamin code vitamins for women and fish oil (I found these to be very effective in helping my feel better and have enough energy to be at school for 8 hours then work for 8 hours in one day)

Thank you so much for all your help!!!

Hi, welcome back!  I'm glad you've recovered from your recent illness.

The 1-2-3 foods are fully Zone balanced in themselves and the grocery additions are small enough amounts to allow your meals to remain in Zone balance.  Think of the 1-2-3 foods as the basic ingredients for you meals, your staples, and then build on them with grocery additions to give yourself multitude of delicious and easy meal possibilities.  Technically you don't have to add grocery foods to each meal, but it would be very boring to eat bread and pasta alone and the grocery items add variety.  It's really that simple.  Not only do the 1-2-3 foods keep you insulin in control, but they also don't contain AA, which enables you to keep inflammation levels lower.  1-2-3 foods have been amazing for me.  I've been very successfully eating in the Zone 15 years and I switched to the 1-2-3 plan when the baked Zone foods became available last year.   Within a couple of months I became even leaner (dropped another 15 pounds).  An even bigger surprise to me came when I had my annual physical this year.  My total cholesterol and my LDL had both made significant drops (30+ points each,  form 1 year ago), a direct result of the lack of AA in Zone foods.  The best part, is meals aer so easy now and I can basically eat whatever  feel  like, from a bowl pasta,  a huge pasta meal with sea food and veggies , a grilled cheese, a breakfast roll wit melted butter, granola milk and berries, a peanut butter sandwich,  French toast, bagels with smoked salmon and cream cheese, risotto, chips, pizza (all kinds of variety here, plus ready made Zone pizzas will be available this Fall), hummus and flatbread, huge meal salad loaded with croutons, bread pudding, stuffing cookies, brownies, pretzels, stuffing...

I'd highly suggest you try the ZoneFast 1-2-3 together with Omega RX and Sea Health Plus.  You'd require a minimum of 8 capsules Omega Rx daily (or 2 teaspoons daily), the amount determined because of you current overweight status.

BTW, you hunger after smoothies is because the carbohydrates in liquid meals, even when Zone balanced, enter the blood stream quicker then with solids and they are spiking you blood sugar.  Some people can stay in the Zone with smoothies, others can't .  It's explained in the book Mastering the Zone
    Good luck!

Elizabeth, welcome back! I don't use the Zone 123 products, I am NOT one of them on that bandwagon. I tried them and they didn't work for me, I was not able to get in the Zone. I was hungry soon after eating, sometimes I just felt bloated like a rock was sitting in my tummy, and overall I didn't feel well using them. However, might be a good option for you, as for the convenience factor. Some of your recipe ideas from your past zone experiences are good ones, and sounds like you are on board with how to create your own zone meals.

Thank you both for replying! I have read both of your posts quite often and its great to get feedback from both of you . I was thinking about switching maybe one meal (my lunch or dinner depending on when I get to/from school) a day to see how that starts. One thing I am concerned about it, is that these foods are foods that I crave and when I go on a diet I cut them out almost completely unless I get a strong craving then I'll have like 1/2 a bagel thin or a small serving of pasta for breakfast. I do not want to start eating some of these SZ foods then feel like I'm becoming more addicted to them. Or, as Cranberrycat did, still feel hungry. Which I am also worried about :/. I still love certain meals that are convenient for me (such as that Turkey Chili ) But was thinking I could use either bagels or pasta one meal a day then also use the snacks. This is what my food intake looked like yesterday (as I am not back on the zone) and because of working out I definitely didn't feel the energy I needed to:

    Meals:
    1000 - 1/2 wheat bagel thin w/ 2 tbsp peanut butter (preworkout)
    1230 - 2 egg whites
    1230 - Steamed Veg:
    1//4 cup baby carrots
    1/2 med yellow onion
    1/2 cup broccoli
    1/2 small red potato
    1/2 green bell pepper

1430 - 1/2 cup dry cereal - honey nut chex

1745 - protein shake (not zone). (post workout)

    1900 - Dinner:
    a chicken breast
    1 handfuls spinach
    A sprinkle of cheese
    2 tbsp yellow onion
    1 cup broccoli

2200 - protein shake (not zone)

Which definitely has its flaws, but I didn't want to go shopping to start zone recipes until I figured out how much of the SZ foods I wanted to do, as well as eat what I already have in the fridge. I definitely felt sick after working out yesterday (day 2 of p90x) which is not something I felt when I worked out eating in the zone. I am going to look at the Sea Health plus. I have read a little into it before awhile ago, but never really looked into it if you know what I mean.

So do you guys think it would cause me to fall back into more of that craving for carbs if I do switch to these? I know they're made specifically to be in the Zone, but I am a bit concerned. Also, if you think it would be good just to switch one meal and snacks a day? I know that you do it differently with SZ foods, but is there a way I could still do blocks with that one meal a day and the snacks to count them in with my 2 zoned meals a day? Thank you both (and everyone else who replies ) for all of your help and knowledge!

Hey I also just saw that they have two new flavors of protein shakes. What I am wondering is whether or not to try them because the strawberry and chocolate ones always threw me out of the zone. I felt like I was starving about two hours after eating them ..

Another thing (sorry! So many questions lol) I read somewhere that for the SZ foods that the meals are 4 blocks and the snacks are 2 blocks is this right? If so, because I am a female, would it make sense to split my meal into two, then eat it for my meal and my snack? Its still 4 blocks all together that way, and honestly I would probably feel more full at school. Twice a week I have a class at 3:15, so I usually eat around 2:30 (its a dance class that is an 1:45 min long) then again I eat around 5:30 because my next class starts at six. The past week since school started I've been eating 1 boiled egg and 1 boiled egg white, spinach, and a roma tomato before class, then at the 5:30 mark I eat more a meal (zone chili). I think it may be ok if I did do the pasta or bagel meals to split it in half then, and eat half at 2:30 and the other half at 5:30 and still stay in the zone and feel well?

I'm kinda thinking my schedule will be:

    0800 - wake up
    0900 - 1 block (SZ snack)
    1100 - 3 blocks
    1430 - 2 blocks (45 before dance t, th) (SZ food)
1730 - 2 blocks (30 min after dance) (SZ food)
2000 - 2 blocks (around this time I usually workout - around 9 so this should give my stomach time to settle down and use the food properly - workout for an hour to hour and a half then have my last snack 1/2 hour to hour after working out as to not get sick.. does this sound right?)
    2300 - 1 block (SZ snack)
    0000 - sleep

I think I have this right.. I eat 11 blocks or occasionally I'll eat 12 blocks if I feel I need it (ie: working out twice in one day)

    Hi Elizabeth,

Zone 1-2-3 foods will not induce cravings.  They do just they opposite.  They eliminate cravings and provide excellent appetite control.  It's fine to combine classic and 1-2-3 Zone meals and snacks.  The pizzas and pastas contain about 4 balanced blocks of P, C and F.  The rest of the foods about 2 balanced blocks of P, C and F each.  It's also fine to split blocks up to suit you needs as long as you follow Zone balancing and timing rules.  Keeping a food diary can be a big help for determining what works best for you.

I highly recommend reading Toxic Fat to become familiar with the Zone again and to learn all  the newest developments.

So... I think I got this..

If I am to eat pizza/pasta I could split that into my two SZ meals.. or have say, a bagel for both because those are 2blocks? And for my snacks.. say cookies I would have one cookie at my morning 1 block and one at my evening 1 block? Thank you so much for your help Sue!

    Hi,

If you're going to eat one bagel each meal for 2 of your meals a day and cookies for 2 of your snacks, then at the least you'd want to either add 1 ounce of protein to each bagel meal or eat 2 cookies for each snack, or add two more blocks to your day somewhere (2 more 1 block snacks or 1 more 2 block snack) in order to get enough protein each day.

    Hey Sue ,

If I add 1 oz of protein to the bagel will that make it a 3 block - or still a 2 block? Also, are the 2 cookies together just one block? I thought each cookie itself was one block, making each package of 2 cookies - 2 blocks?

    Hi Elizabeth,

Please go to the Tools bar at the top of the page and click it then use the Calculator to calculate your activity level and body details; then assess your block requirements. Your challenge with ZoneFast 1-2-3 seems that you can't figure out how to square out your day. I would not start the day with a snack in any circumstances, it's best to start the day with ZoneFast Grenola and 1/3c of Greek Yogurt with maybe 10-12 blueberries or 5 strawberries ontop. That's a 3 block morning for someone starting P90X.

I have run a few models on your height and activity level and I find that with many different and ranging BF%, but a median at 25%, you're supposed to eat 14 Blocks a day! At 29% BF, your Blocks are 13 per day. It's important to note that for your body to feel satiated, your muscles to remain in anti-catabolic states and for your fat traps to open, in addition to FO & Polyphenols, you need to eat all of your daily intake alotment. It's ok to short out your C block here and there to adjust the day, but it's generally not advisable to fail to take in the protein requirements. And it's best really to eat a good round zone meal than a protein shake after a work out, speaking from anecdotal experience.

So, I'd suggest you start your day with that 3B breakfast with real food in it, drop all that liquid from your diet. ZoneFast 1-2-3 will help you eat like you normally ate before, and allow your creative pallet to come out. I start most of my mornings with Grenola and Yogurt and it's always a great way to get natural Probiotics in the morning along with a great balanced protein that digests slowly and carbs that absorb slowly.

At Lunch, you sound like you can do it better with your own Traditional Zone foods, and if you like your chili's and stuffed tomatoes, then keep eating those to keep it lively. Also you can try to zone using the Zone Plate method if you eat with friends for lunch.

Dinner you should definitely consider the Orzo. It's awesome to cook; I find in a 4c pot with 1.5c of water and 2 Tsp of reduced-fat Pesto, along with a handful of slice portebello mushrooms, is beyond a doubt the best 4B zone meal I've had in my life. It works marvelously even after the most intense 60Minutes of body building at my gym. It's compact, conventional and delectable, but I'd recommend you consider supplementing with some fiber at least at the beginning. IF you eat it this way, then you'll have alot less fiber than you're used to. I've found that taking fiber with much of the ZoneFast 1-2-3 foods has been a big help.

To start, I'd recommend you buy 1 5-pack of ZoneFast Grenola or Penut Butter Grenola. Also go ahead and try that Orzo dinner pack, to try and eat a block dinner. I've found that adding some cheese and veggies on the side can make it go to 5 blocks, or 2.5B Lunch if you so choose.

At 14 blocks, I'd suggest you eat as follows:

    0800 - wake up
0900 - 3 block (ZoneFast Grenola and Greek Yogurt with berries)
1100 - 1 block (String Cheese, etc. Ave. cost per block of ZoneFast snacks is $1/Block, if you can do it cheaper, save your money)
    1430 - 2 blocks (45 before dance t, th) (SZ food)
1730 - 2 blocks (30 min after dance) (SZ food)
    2000 - 4 blocks after workout
    2300 - 1 block (SZ snack)
    0000 - sleep

That's only 13 blocks; since you're used to 11-12, it's wise to modestly adjust, unless your own calculations show you're actually supposed to get 15 Blocks.

The key here btw is your P90X. Keep that up, and you're Daily Active ok!

    Good luck!!!

Thank you so much! I didn't realize I should be having more blocks. Before going in the hospital in march I was working out 4 days a week an hour at a time, but that was 1/2 hour running and 1/2 hour weights, so it wasn't as strenuous as p90x seems to be! The reason I only have 1 block as my first thing is that I'm usually just barely getting to class at 8:30 (on m, w, f) , I usually eat something during class but, I'm also not very awake and would prefer to eat a bit later, I just know I should eat something in the first hour of waking. If you think this would help though, I will my teachers don't care at this point whether we eat in class or not lol. The only concern about having 4 blocks after my workout is that it is later at night. I know its after I worked out and four hours before bed, It just makes me a little concerned. Also, I would be driving home on Tuesday and Thursday at that time, because my last class doesn't get out until 1930. I also have to try to keep in mind with most of my meals I'm at school or in between classes or working, so trying to find a microwave is difficult and part of the reason I wanted to include SZ foods. I can eat at 2030 on Tues and Thurs however (the 4 blocks) and just keep it at 2000 the rest of the week? I guess I just felt a little leary eating a 4 block meal and tend to try to break it up a little more throughout the day, but I'll definitely try switching the blocks around. It looks like I'll be jumping back on the zone wednesday, not that I have a lot of bad food in my fridge but things I should eat, some unfavorable carbs (potatoes), some bbq shredded beef, and some beef stew I made (too many red potatoes for the zone )

Have you ever tried p90x? I feel amazing and just completed my third day! Weight is 167.9. I do find it a little hard on my spine, which is why I opted to do p90x lean, but I see my spine dr tomorrow so I'll talk to him about it all then and see if I need to adjust any of my exercises since I now know what they are, and which ones bother me . I definitely was thinking about getting the peanut butter granola, mostly because it would be easy to eat in class but also, I love peanut butter. Those are always my favorite zone bars, with peanuts .

Yes, adding 1 oz protein to a Zone 1-2-3 bagel makes it 3 blocks of protein.

    Yes, 2 cookies contain 2 balanced blocks of P, C and F.

It’s of the utmost importance to eat you full protein requirement daily.  If you plan to eat one bagel in place of a your 3 block meal, then you will only be eating 2 blocks at the meal.  If you do this twice a day, you're short 2 blocks for the day.  You must make up for the missing block(s) either in the meal(s) or some other time during the same day.  In my post, I offered three options (adding protein to the meal or eating 2 cookies for a snack(s) instead of 1 or eating 2 more balanced blocks of your choice sometime during the day.

    Hi,

You can use this calculator to determine your block needs:  http://www.zonediet.com/Tools/Calcu...fault.aspx

It's fine to begin the day with either a 1 block snack or a 3 block meal (or even a 2 block meal or 4 block meal if you choose) as long as you spread your blocks throughout the day according to Zone guidelines and make sure to eat your full protein requirement daily.

Just wanted to clarify a statement that Sue made...

Zone 1-2-3 foods don't work for everyone.  They did not work for me, and the DID induce cravings and DID NOT provide excellent appetite control for me.  And, I used them for almost a month, following the guidelines strictly.

This is not to say that you will have the same result as me, just wanted to make sure to say that as we are individuals, we will have individual responses to foods.

If you are going to incorporate the Zone 1-2-3 foods in with traditional foods, I would recommend treating the individual zone products as blocks.  Most of the packaged servings are rounded 2-block portions, with the exception of the bread and the pasta.  Bread is 1 rounded block per slice, and the pasta comes in a rounded 4-block package.

Just to throw this in, I found that the pasta was the one product that was absolutely the worst for me in terms of appetite control.  Again, my experiences are just my individual response, and you might find different resuts.

    Hope that helps!

    Hi Everyone,

For the sake of readers who might be confused, here's my two cents re the above quoted material, and I am confident that Zone Labs would concur with those statements.  That is indeed what the 1-2-3 foods are designed to do, and they work extremely well.  Some people may require stricter adherence and more adjusting than others due to their individual genetic makeup.  As I've heard Dr. Sears say, try them and if you don't like them, then don't buy them again.

Elizabeth i think that you'll love the portability of the ZoneFast foods. (What's SZ?) These are very easy to keep in a bag or on a trip; I've taken a few with them in tow and found the convenience is great. Grenola is at the top of the list for portability and if you don't have issues with Dairy, then Grenola with Milk, Soy Milk or Yogurt is a great way to take that evening class meal, make it work, make it simple and not get hungry, which I believe reading your reply is your truest goal.

Definitely do some measurements on yourself and recalculate the suggested block totals based on your actual data. I think Cookies are also a great item for you because they're so portable, but I have to warn you, I've found the cookies to be among the least effective of all the Zonefast foods. Possibly the Prezels could be a better match, especially the Sesame Pretzel which would warm in your bag to room temp all day then be edible for you at night with maybe some celery sticks and a cheese string?

I think once you see the convenience and portability of these foods, that will be the greatest benefit for you. Starting with a few key items, 5 at a time is a great start. Because you're an exprienced Zoner with success in the past, you're probably fine holding to try a custom assortment or Women's jumpstart kit until you've assessed your tolerance to one or two early tries.

LOL, I am confident that Zone Labs would concur, as well (isn't it their product?)!

Lets just keep it real--if some people need stricter adherence and more adjusting to a food that was "designed" to reduce cravings and control appetite, then my interpretation of that is that they don't work for "everyone".

I don't have a problem with anyone using these foods, they seem to work for many who post here.  They don't work for me, and I think it is important for people to know both sides.

    Cheers!

Steve, I saw your comment regarding the cookies, and I would have to concur with that.  Back when I tried the foods, I recall the very same thing, that the cookies are probably the least effective of all of the foods that I tried.  I had forgotten all about them--I didn't care for the sweetness, either.  Seemed too sweet, almost overwhelmingly sweet.  I even gave some cookies to my kids, and they didn't like them, either.

The cookies are actually an interesting topic because while they serve a great purpose, in order to make then edible, they have to contain things that are very un-zone, like Chocolate Chips and MM's. I've found more luck with the Penut Butter & Heath Bar Toffee versions than the chocolate chips. When I eat them, they are filling, but 2-3 hours later, I'm hungry. that's possible because a 2 B snack in the course of a 17 B day isn't meant to go longer than 2-3 hours. But if a person ate only 2 cookies and though that would be a Lunch, they need to rethink that and choose something more completely zone, like the Sesame Pretzels.

Cran, just wondering, did either the Sesame Pretzels, Grenola or Orzo not work for you? I've found these 3 to be the best, most satisfying zonefast foods. I realize some didn't work for you, but I was just wondering if you lumped the bad in with the cook and threw it all out in the end. The grenola & Yogurt breakfast especially is really easy, fast, cheap, tasty and very very zone. I rarely even get a peep of hunger between 8am and 1pm when I eat lunch after eating that.

I never tried the granola or the pretzels.  Suppose it could be worth a try, if I wanted to try it again (I may consider ordering it for my daughter again since she is proclaiming vegetarianism).
The orzo did not work at all.  I tried it using one of the recipes that came along with the shipment, I think I added some green pepper/onion/tomato but I don't recall the exact recipe at this time.  It was delicious, but it just didn't hold me for very long at all.

My best experience was with the bread, I recall there was a sandwich that I made with hummus, avocado slices, tomato and onion (I think--again, don't recall from that long ago).
But, results were not consistent.  Think it worked best when I went overboard with the avocado!

Thanks Sue I had forgotten where that calculator was! So I am not sure if I am considered active, or very active. Active, I should have 12 a day, but very active I should have 14. Should I have 12 the days I just do p90x, and 14 the days I do both? Would it be ok to split them up like that?

Also, I got a speeding ticket yesterday *grr* First ticket I've had since I got a speeding ticket at 16, which really sucks. However, that means I'll have to pay for driving school instead of getting the zone 1-2-3 products (although Now I am definitely convinced not to get the cookies and to try granola's and pretzels . But it may be a good thing, that gives me a couple weeks to be completely in the zone before trying it so I'll know exactly how I feel to know which ones effect me more/less.

I definitely appreciate you guys letting me know what has worked for you, so it helps me as well! Also not sure which I'll get whether orzo or just the pasta or the pizza crust.. still debating that one! I will go with a custom pack when I get it but I want to get more of certain things and less of others, and I will lean towards the side of

Elizabeth, I am glad that our experiences have been helpful for you!  That is what this is all about.  Just keep in mind that what works/doesn't work for me and others who have shared may not be the same for others.

    Sorry about the ticket!

Elizabeth, keep in mind that every body is different. What works for one may not work for another and vise-versa
