Hi Karen, one ounce of raw chicken is one Zone protein block. To make it easier, you can try the hand-eye method (no weighing involved). It's the way I lost 100 pounds with the Zone. Here's a description of it: http://www.zonediet.com/Tools/Quick...fault.aspx

Good question Karen. When I make ground turkey I count it as 4 1/2 0z cooked weight equals 3 blocks protein. Should it be 4 1/2 raw weight?

Yes Claire, it should be raw.  The amounts shown in the Zone food block list are for raw meat, fish and pountry, except the obvious cooked items such as deli-style meats.   You'll be eating more protein than you need (as well as throwing off meal balance) if you apply the Zone food block list amounts to cooked meat.  The moisture lost in cooking reduces the weight needed to yield 1 protein block.

Hello! I am new to the Zone diet.
Please help me understand how protein should be weighted.
I do understand that 1 oz of raw chicken is 1 block of protein but I always measure my meat when it is cooked.
How should I measure one block of protein in cooked chicken?
So far I have been weighting 3 oz of cooked chicken for my 3 blocks of protein which now I understand is not the correct way to do it. Any advise is appreciated!

Weigh cooked meat to about 75% - except deli luncheon meat- which is not necessarily the best choice, anyway.
Liquid is lost during cooking. And use the label on canned meat such as wild salmon, which is already cooked.
