Hi All, Been trying to be "In The Zone" for about four days now after being an Atkins for a week (missed my carbs too much). Feel great, losing weight nicely. I've started tracking everything and I'm having a hard time getting enough good fat, it's low every day. I think I'm doing the calculations correctly and I should be getting about 110 -120 grams of fat a day (same as protein). I do take one Omega 3 capsule (1000mg) and I've been looking at some Salmon Oil to use as a supplement also but I notice some health warning regrading blood thinning. 1 or 2 grams of Fish Oil as per the Omega 3 capsules don't make much of a dent in 110 - 120 grams needed per day. (unless I'm calculating all wrong). Warnings and precautions: Supplementation of ocean fish oils may predispose a person to bleeding problems following surgery. It is recommended that fish oils be discontinued one week before surgery and resumed upon the recommendations of a physician. Is this a concern? It appears to be a potent blood thinner. Each day I'm about 20-25 grams short of fat and would like an easy way to add good fat into the diet as a supplement. Eventually I will learn enough recipes that I can get more good fat from cooked meals themselves but for now looking for simple and convenient. Thanks a lot, looks like a great community and active forum. |

I'm just counting grams right now. 157 G carbs 120 G protein 120 G fat Isn't that 40-30-30 ? |

Hi David, 40-30-30 refers to percentages of calories, not grams. One gram of protein contains about 4 calories, one gram of carbohydrate contains about 4 calories, and one gram of fat contains about 9 calories. When you do the math you'll see that the percentage of calories breakdown for 157 g carbohydrate/ 120 g protein/ 120 g fat is 29/22/49. |

Thanks Sue I'll look at this again... 120 G of fat did seem like a lot. Oddly enough I was still losing some weight. |

You're welcome David. Your weight loss could be from retained fluid (dietary fat will not cause your insulin to increase the way eating too many carbpohydrates will) and/or, if you happen to require more than 17 blocks a day, from muscle loss (the 120 g protein you're eating is about 17 blocks). Your best bet will be to do as Tech Support recommended and use the calculator to determine your needs. Once you have your calculator results you can still continue to count grams if you like, and doing so with your actual requirement in mind will improve your Zone experience. |

David, how have you been doing these past few days? Are you getting used to the portions etc..? Just stick with it and it becomes second nature.
I adore olive oil and like to drizzle it over vegy dishes. Also peanut butter goes a long way with me, especially on an apple for snack.
Good luck and come back often. It really helps! |
