I sure couldn't wait a whole week with all of that on the shelf in my freezer, heh heh. :-) You must have received it in one of those long sectioned boxes. They're pretty cool, huh? :-) Here's to new beginnings for you and the fresh face ZoneFast has put on the Zone for me! Have fun with it! |

I HAVE AN ANGEL FOR A DAUGHTER. SHE GRABBED MY SHORT SHOPPING LIST WHILE I WAS OUT AND PICKED UP WHAT I NEEDED TO BEGIN THE 2 WEEK FAST TRACK. TODAY WAS DAY ONE. WE HAD A TALK LAST NIGHT AND I HAVE DECIDED NOT TO OVER ANALYZE MY JOURNEY HERE ON THIS THREAD. I AM ALREADY REFOCUSED ON LOSING WEIGHT AND LOWERING NUMBERS. THAT SHOULD BE ENOUGH. BESIDES...WITH THE WHEELCHAIR AND A PROGRESSIVE DISORDER AT 62 YRS OLD...I AM NOT YOUR TYPICAL ZONER...AN UNDERSTATEMENT I KNOW...LOL IT'S BETTER IF I JUST FORGE AHEAD AND STICK WITH THE ACCOUNTABILITY THREAD. THERE I CAN GET ADVICE AND ENCOURAGEMENT WITHOUT ANALYZING EACH MOUTHFUL OF MY NEW ZONE FOODS. GEE...HOPE THIS MADE SENSE. SUE...AS ALWAYS YOU HAVE BEEN A GREAT CHEERLEADER AND I WHOLEHEARTEDLY APPRECIATE IT((HUG)) I DID GET THE NEW LONG BOX AND IT WAS ALMOST LIKE GETTING LONG STEMMED ROSES FROM THE FLORIST! |

Typical zoner? Lol! The typical zoner is anyone who practices Zone living. The zoners in my family range in age from 1 to 80, and one of them (coincidentally she has also recently switched to Zone Fast plan) is age 66, has chronic health concerns and is in a wheelchair. :-)
Enjoy the new foods! :-)

OK THEN MAYBE I WILL STAY HERE AND JOURNAL. I WAS AFRAID IF I HAD TO TWEAK MY DIET FOR MEDICAL REASONS THAT IT MIGHT CONFUSE OTHERS THAT MIGHT STUMBLE ACROSS MY POSTS. GLAD TO KNOW SO MANY AGES ARE INVOLVED IN YOUR FAMILY SUE....GIVES ME LOTS OF HOPE TO FEEL "NORMAL" AGAIN. THAT IS THE DREAM OF A SEVERE HYPOGLYCEMIC...JUST TO FEEL NORMAL! (INSERT DIZZY SMILIE HERE)LOL 2/10 WEDNESDAY'S MENU BREAKFAST: WHITE BAGEL, 2T LF CREAMCHEESE, 2 STRAWBERRIES MASHED INTO A SPREAD. LUNCH: FLATBREAD, 1 OZ MOZZ CHEESE & TINY TOMATO (SMALLER THAN A PING PONG BALL) HEATED IN THE MICRO AND DELISH. SNACK: M&M COOKIES DINNER: WILL BE FUSILLI, TOMATO & SPINACH. ?QUESTION? I WONDER IF I CAN MOVE MY SNACK TO AFTER DINNER. NOT SURE I CAN "FIT" IT INTO MY TUMMY BEFORE. AND I NEED SOMETHING IN THERE FOR THE 8 HR SLEEP OR I WAKE UP SHAKY. ANY THOUGHTS? **I WASN'T HUNGRY YET BUT IT WAS LUNCHTIME. I KNOW I'M ON A "HIGH" WITH EXCITEMENT BUT I AM NOT HUNGRY AT ALL WHICH IS A MIRACLE AND I FEEL GREAT. I EVEN WORKED IN THE OFFICE TODAY. LOTS OF ENERGY AND NO FOGGY HEAD. I LOVE THAT PART THE BEST. DAY 1 IS GOING BETTER THAN I EVEN EXPECTED. PLEASE LADIES & GENTS....I AM OPEN TO SUGGESTIONS &/OR CRITIQUES IF SOMEONE SEES ANYTHING WRONG WITH MY ADD ONS. SO FAR I'VE BEEN FOLLOWING THE "SAMPLE GUIDE" THAT CAME IN THE BOX BECAUSE THIS IS A BIT DIFFERENT THAN THE PLATE PLAN I WAS USING. I'M NOT GOOD AT BLOCKS. LOL |

Mel, tweak away, because that is a very important part of the Zone. I don't know if you've read any of my history here, but I had a lot of difficulty with hypoglycemic symptoms on a daily basis in my pre-Zone days (jittery, spacey, dizzy, faint, etc. to the point is was interfering with everyday life...scary stuff). It's gone now, as long as I'm careful to stick to the Zone. I have to tweak for the best fit. Many people here do. You’re meals look great. Don't be afraid to add veggies to them, like the literature states (take care with legumes, though, especially since you're a person prone to hypoglycemic symptoms), and no need to do think about block amounts. Simply add the amounts you'd like to eat in the meal. The veggies mentioned in the pamphlet will enable you to keep your meals calorie restricted with a low GL. Re the snack/dinner question, depends on your timing. If you want to post times for lunch, snack, meal and bed, I can make suggestions. In lieu of that, it might help you to look at my daily journal and note how I spread out my food. Yours will be a little different because I need to eat an additional package of food, as a man would, due to my higher LBM. I'll sometimes eat only 1/2 the snack package and eat the rest of it at another time during the same day. Also, because the dinner selections (pastas and pizzas) contain twice as much food as the rest of the varieties, l eat half of those at a time, and eat the other half (or a package of a different Zone food) at another time of day. Basically, for me it works out to eating one package of Zone food (half a package when I choose pasta or pizza) 6 times a day. Since you are eating 1 package less food than I am each day (you are following the woman's, I'm basically following the men's), you could do a similar thing, but eat 1 package (or half package when you choose pizza or pasta) 5 times a day. If this is confusing, please ask me more. Take it one step at a time. You’ll get the hang of it. I was so not used to eating baked goods and pasta, the first couple weeks I simply used the suggested menu, subbing for things if I felt like eating a bagel instead of package of cookies, or a pretzel, etc . |

THIS MAKES SO MUCH MORE SENSE NOW. THANKS. I WILL PRINT THIS POST OF YOURS OUT FOR REFERENCE. MY PROBLEM IS THAT I TAKE A LONG TIME TO DIGEST AND MY STOMACH IS IN "CRAMPED QUARTERS" SO TO SPEAK FROM SITTING FOR 20 YRS . GOD BLESS YOUR ABLE TO EAT ALL THAT FOOD. I USED TO & STAYED SKINNY FOR MANY YEARS ....105 WAS MY HIGHEST. I MIGHT HAVE PROBLEMS WITH THE PIZZA BEING SO BIG TOO CAUSE THE FLAT BREAD WAS A LOT TO STUFF IN! I COULD ALSO CHANGE DINNER WITH LUNCH RIGHT? JUST SO LONG AS I GET THE 4 MEALS IN? LORD I HOPE YOU DON'T TIRE OF ALL THIS!!! LOLOLOLOLOL
TOMORROW I WILL TRY THIS:
BREAK ABOUT 8AM LUNCH IS 12 - 1 PM DINNER IS 5- 6 PM ( 1/2 OF ORZO) SNACK AT 8-ISH. ( ONE COOKIE)
IN THE SUMMER I MIGHT BE ABLE TO FIT IN SOME MORE VEGGIES OR ON DAYS I AM MORE ACTIVE. I "FILL UP" VERY EASILY AND THEN CANNOT BREATHE. SO IT WILL BE A TRIAL BASIS. I ATE THE COOKIES AFTER DINNER AND TO TEL THE TRUTH COULD HAVE JUST HAD ONE. THE FUSILLI IS JUST TOO MUCH FOR ME AND I AM OVER STUFFED TONITE. I KNOW "WE" WILL GET IT RIGHT WITH TWEAKING AND YOUR SUGGESTIONS. BECAUSE IF THIS WORKS FOR ME IN THE REDUCING PART...I WILL BE ONE HAPPY CAMPER. LOT LESS COOKING AND I COULD EAT THIS STUFF FOR A LOOOOONG TIME. I LOVE IT SO FAR. DAY ONE DONE AND GONE THE SUN ( A PLAYING TAPS SMILEY HERE) ROFL
SWEET DREAMS. |

Hi Mel, "THIS MAKES SO MUCH MORE SENSE NOW. THANKS. I WILL PRINT THIS POST OF YOURS OUT FOR REFERENCE. MY PROBLEM IS THAT I TAKE A LONG TIME TO DIGEST AND MY STOMACH IS IN "CRAMPED QUARTERS"..." I have gastroparesis (delayed stomach emptying; in my case, intermittently very delayed). "I MIGHT HAVE PROBLEMS WITH THE PIZZA BEING SO BIG TOO CAUSE THE FLAT BREAD WAS A LOT TO STUFF IN! I COULD ALSO CHANGE DINNER WITH LUNCH RIGHT? JUST SO LONG AS I GET THE 4 MEALS IN?" Yes you can switch them. "TOMORROW I WILL TRY THIS: BREAK ABOUT 8AM LUNCH IS 12 - 1 PM DINNER IS 5- 6 PM ( 1/2 OF ORZO) SNACK AT 8-ISH. ( ONE COOKIE)" You'll still need to fit the other half of the orzo (or a replacement food for it) into your day tomorrow, and you should probably try to get the other cookie in too. If you split the meal and snack in half and don't eat the other halves at a different time of day, you're not going to be eating enough food. You might benfit from calling the ZoneFast nutrition couselor and asking about how to tweak for your needs. "THE FUSILLI IS JUST TOO MUCH FOR ME AND I AM OVER STUFFED TONITE." That's exactly why I split the pastas and pizza in two, but I make sure to eat enough to make up for the other half at a different time of day. I haven't even attempted to eat an entire pizza or pasta dish at one sitting because that wouldn't go well for me. "I KNOW "WE" WILL GET IT RIGHT WITH TWEAKING AND YOUR SUGGESTIONS. BECAUSE IF THIS WORKS FOR ME IN THE REDUCING PART...I WILL BE ONE HAPPY CAMPER. LOT LESS COOKING AND I COULD EAT THIS STUFF FOR A LOOOOONG TIME. I LOVE IT SO FAR" Great! :-) I know I'm going to be eating it for a long time. I have a strong family history of Alzheimer's which necessitates I adhere strictly to the Zone with as much calorie restriction and attention to inflammation lowering as possible. These foods plus the fish oil concentrates and polyphenols provide the best shot at that, not to mention they're absolutely delicious and fun to eat! "DAY ONE DONE AND GONE THE SUN ( A PLAYING TAPS SMILEY HERE) ROFL SWEET DREAMS." Wow, that makes me feel like it's 50 years ago and I'm back in Brownie camp. :-) Have a good evening! |

Hang on a second, I think I have just discovered why Sue and I differ so in terms of hunger control... GASTROPARESIS! Due to gastroparesis, there is a delayed emptying of the tummy and one feels full longer. Has nothing to do with being in the Zone. It is a functional thing. Wow, that explains a lot. |

<div class='NTForums_Quote'>Posted By Cranberrycat on 02/10/2010 11:43 PM Hang on a second, I think I have just discovered why Sue and I differ so in terms of hunger control... GASTROPARESIS! Due to gastroparesis, there is a delayed emptying of the tummy and one feels full longer. Has nothing to do with being in the Zone. It is a functional thing. Wow, that explains a lot. </div> Nope, actually it doesn't. First of all, I've never had fantastic satiety times between meals except with a certain few foods, which are the Zone functional foods and my Brownie Batter Smoothie, which happens to be made with a Zone functional food (Dr. Sears Zone Protein Powder). Prior to the availability of Zone protien powder this smoothie didn't work as well for me. Second, I don't feel full and have none of the typical symptoms of gastroparsis. Two different groups of GI docs at two major hospitals have confirmed it is not related to my short satiety times (yes, short...as I've posted her for many years, I have a long history of carbohydrate sensitivity and difficulty maintaining saitiety). Their remarks agreed with those of Barry Sears, that satiety and appetite are controlled hormonally and not by the amount of food that happens to be in your stomach. Not that I need to go into more detail but here's more. My nuclear imaging stomach emptying tests over the past 5 years show different results, none really concurring with the others. My docs have still designated it to be a form of gastroparesis, even though, as mentioned, I have none of the typical symptoms of it, just proof on the nuclear imaging scans. With this in mind they have advised me to eat in a particular manner, and to my surprise, it was basically what I've been doing for many years with the Zone diet. My improved satiety since eating according to ZoneFast has everything to do with the foods and the plan. |

Oh, so your diagnosis is not necessarily correct? Still, I think it does explain a lot. You have a carb sensitivity, yet you tolerate some foods with higher glycemic values, like the Zone foods and the Zone Fast foods. And, if I recall, you were making that smoothie and seemed to be very successful with it before you started using zone protein powder, so I wouldn't necessarily give the zone foods all of the credit. Whether or not you have a diagnosis of gastroparesis, it does change things for you in terms of how you handle/digest foods. Yes, with that condition, I would imagine that they would recommend a zone-like diet, with its anti-inflammatory properties. The Zone foods work for you because of the way that the proteins are bypassed from the gut (you can read all about it in my post regarding molecular-baking). It has nothing to do with managing insulin levels, which as been the cornerstone of the Zone Diet for many years. |

They do not share anything in common with the reality of my situation. Additionally the dietary recommendations from my GI doctors are unrelated to the to the anti-inflammatory properties of the Zone diet and lifestyle. The last paragraph in the quote above demonstrates the author is misunderstanding the fundamental aspects about the Zone baked goods, one of which is that by their design they prevent blood sugar spikes. Zone Tech Support has already posted info about this in this forum. |

I CAN ONLY SAY "DIFFERENT STROKES FOR DIFFERENT FOLKS". ROFLMAO LIFE IS TOO SHORT FOR ALL THIS.
2/11 THURSDAY:
BREAK: 2 SLICES CINNAMON BREAD & BUTTER 1T SNACK: 1 COOKIE ( I'LL THAT OTHER COOKIE IN TODAY) LUNCH: 1/2 PIZZA W/ TOMATO & MOZZ CHEESE W/ 1 OZ TURKEY (ALL I COULD FIT IN DINNER: SOUTHWEST ORZO SALAD (1/2 OF IT & A SPRINKLING OF GRILLED CHICKEN. SNACK: 1 COOKIE
SUE...I ADDED SOME TURKEY TO MAKE UP THE MISSING 1/2 PIZZA AND TONITE I WILL ADD A BIT OF CHICKEN TO MAKE UP FOR THE MISSING ORZO. I THINK THIS IS ABOUT THE ONLY WAY I CAN STAY ON THIS PROGRAM. I AM DOINGTHE 14 DAY FAST TRACK AND FOLLOWINGTHEIR SAMPLE PAGE. THERE ARE NOT A LOT OF ADDITIONS FOR THIS 2 WEEK PLAN. THEN WAS GOING TO (MAYBE) SWITCH OVER TO A COMBO OF SUPER ZONE AND THE BARS ETC ALONG WITH TRADITIONAL WHOLE FOOD COOKING. BUT I WANTED TO SEE IF THE FAST TRACK KIT WOULD HELP ME GET THE SCALE GOING AGAIN.
MY OBSERVATION FOR TODAY IS: WOW!! I ACTUALLY HAVE TO REMIND MYSELF TO EAT!! I AM USUALLY STARVING ALL DAY (EVEN WITH THE SLOW DIGESTION) AND IT'S BEEN VERY DIFFICULT IN THE PAST TO KEEP MY HUNGER CONTROLLED.
I DON'T HAVE ALL THE "MEDICAL LINGO YOU BOTH HAVE BUT FOR ME AND MY BODY : I KNOW THAT JUNK FOOD GOES RIGHT DOWN WITH NO PROBLEMS (LOL) AND DENSER FOODS & RAW FOODS TAKE FOREVER. I COOK OR STEAM EVERYTHING. EVEN WITH THE "STOMACH" FULL OF FOOD THE "HUNGER" COMES ANYWAY..I DON'T KNOW HOW THAT HAPPENS. MY HUNGER AND MY DIGESTION HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH EACH OTHER. LOL AND IF I DON'T IGNORE IT, I BECOME A GLUTTON FOR THE DAY AND A SLAVE TO THE BELLY BY NIGHTFALL.....BECAUSE THEN THE REAL PAIN BEGINS ALONG WITH BLOAT, WATER RETENSION AND CONSTIPATION. (TMI ?) THIS IS WHAT I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO RID MYSELF OF FOR A FEW YEARS NOW. SO FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MANY YEARS IT IS FEELING "UNDER CONTROL" THIS WEEK.... WITH ZONING LAST WEEK (PLATE METHOD) AND THE SZ FOODS YESTERDAY AND TODAY. SOMETIMES I THINK THERE IS NO RHYME OR REASON....BUT I DO KNOW THAT FOR ME IT DEPENDS ON 3 THINGS. IF I AM HAVING A GOOD DAY, WEAKENED MUSCLES AND ENZYMES.
I ALSO POSTED AHEAD OF TIME IN CASE YOU GUYS HAVE COMMENTS. |

Sounds great Mel! There's no need to understand how it all works to reap the benefits. :-) Long story short you're less hungry because you're gaining hormonal control (it's not about how full one's stomach is). You're also lowering your inflammation and restricting your caloric with these foods. Wait until you see how different you feel in a couple more weeks. Have fun!

Nope, no one really has to understand how it works, but I do think that a lot of people are genuinely interested in knowing how things work--and especially in the case of "molecular baking" which is basically unknown to the rest of the world. |

Mel- It seems like you are really adjusting to the Zone and it's great to hear that you are able to stay satiated! I know that is a big difference that I have noticed in myself as well, where the tummy isn't grumbling quite as often as it used to!
Here is a quote that I think relates to success in the Zone:

OK...LET'S PLAY NICE IN MELLIE'S SANDBOX. EMILY...AWWWW....THANKS SO MUCH. YOU BROUGHT A HAPPY TEAR TO MY EYE. AND I LOVE THE QUOTE. THANK YOU FOR BRINGING IT HERE. I HOPE TO MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE IN MY LIFE HERE AT THE ZONE. IT WAS WINSTON CHURCHILL THAT SAID "Never, never, never, never give up". HE HAD SOME GREAT IDEAS. HAVE A SUPER NIGHT. *****2/11 DINNER CHANGES: ORZO & SQUASH (THANKS SUE) HAD NO YELLOW SO USED BUTTERNUT BUT CHANGED THE AMTS BECAUSE IT'S HIGHER DENSITY...SEE, I'M LEARNING LOL SO I ADDED 1/2 + 1/2 = 2 MEALS. NO WINE SO ADDED MORE BROTH. NO FRESH HERBS SO ADDED DRIED. IT WAS DELICIOUS AND A KEEPER BUT WOULD BE MUCH BETTER WITH FRESH HERBS. SUE... YOU WERE SOOOO RIGHT. I FELT MUCH BETTER WITH 1/2 THE SERVING. THE LEARNING PROCESS IS GOING QUICKER THAN I EXPECTED. MAYBE YOU CAN TEACH AN OLD DOG NEW TRICKS! A FUNNY NOTE...OUR OFFICE FED EX MAN SAW MY ORDER SITTING THERE AND GAVE IT TO THE NEXT DRIVER TO BRING JUST A FEW MINUTES AGO. HE WAS GOING HOME AND WHEN HE SAW "DIET" ON THE BOX, THOUGHT I MIGHT NEED IT OVER THE 4 DAY WEEKEND. I AM LAUGHING MY FOOL HEAD OFF CAUSE I JUST READ SOMEWHERE THAT SOMEONE DIDN'T LIKE THE ADVERTISING ON THE BOX...AND NOW BECAUSE IT IS ON THE BOX I GOT MY SHAKES, BARS, BROWNIES AND CINNAMON BUNS!! THE KIDS WANT TO TRY THE SHAKES SO I BOUGHT 3 KINDS FOR THEM TO MIX AND GO. HAVE A GREAT WEELKEND ZONE PEEPS! |

So when I put that Churchill quote up, I didn't even realize that you had it as a part of your profile quote. We must be thinking on the same wavelength Since you already had that quote, here's a couple new ones: If you don't like something change it; if you can't change it, change the way you think about it. ~Mary Engelbreit Being in a good frame of mind helps keep one in the picture of health. ~Author Unknown Can you tell that I love quotes?? lol That's great that you received your Zone order early....enjoy!! |

Mel, isn't that orzo recipe good? Glad you used less of the butternut. You're right, you don't want to add much of it at all to your ZoneFast meals. Good, to hear the half orzo meal works better. Don't forget to make up for it somewhere though! Guess the name on the box paid off for you. Glad got your other Zone order right away! I have to admit, I'm proud of all good things the Zone has done for me, and I love seeing those Zone boxes on my front porch! The more the better! :-) (I guess everyone here has figured that out already, lol!). I'm always ready to share Zone info with anyone who asks me. (I know, that' no big secret here either, lolol!) My whole family is big fan of the Zone. My husband lost 67 pounds with it, down to his ideal weight, and he loves the Zone bakery foods. My mom and my cousin are both recently switched to doing the ZoneFast plan too. |
