A FRIEND JUST GIFTED ME A SMALL CASE OF GROATS. NOW I CAN'T FIND ANY INFO HERE OR IN MY BOOK ABOUT THEM. I AM HOPING I CAN USE THEM SPARINGLY AT LEAST. DOES ANYONE KNOW IF THEY ARE A GOOD OR POOR CARB CHOICE?? IS IT TREATED LIKE LIKE RICE? SHE COOKED SOME FOR ME WITH LOTS OF DICED VEGGIES AND I REALLY LIKED IT.

    THANKS IN ADVANCE

You can use oat groats. They are just another form of a minimally processed oat grain. You can use them in the same manner that you would use steel cut oats.

    Sounds like a yummy meal!

Mel, if you mean oat groats, they're a favorable carb for the Zone. No they're not treated as unfavorable carb like rice would be for the Zone. Use the info on the nutrition label to figure out block amounts. One carb block would be the amount that provides 9 grams of insulin stimulating carb (insulin stimulating carb means total carb minus total fiber).

    THE LABEL READS:
    BOB'S RED MILL
    ORGANIC WHOLE GRAIN[B] BUCKWHEAT[B] GROATS

THEY LOOK A BIT LIKE GREENISH-TAN CAT LITTER...ROFLMAO

ONE WAY SHE MADE IT WITH ALMONDS, GREEN PEPPER, A FEW RAISINS AND SPICES WAS OUT OF THIS WORLD. SHE ALSO MAKES IT WITH ONIONS, CELERY, PEPPERS, MUSHROOMS AND THAT WAS EVEN BETTER. YUM!

    SUE.....THE TOTAL CARBS ARE 31 MINUS THE 3 FIBER= 28 FOR 1/4 C UNCOOKED =3+ BLOCKS? (9X3=27)
I GUESS IT WILL BE EASIER TO MEASURE OUT ONCE I COOK ONE SERVING JUST TO SEE WHAT IT AMOUNTS TO. OR MAYBE DOUBLE THE INGREDIENTS AND GET MY 3/2 BLOCK MEALS. BY JOVE..I THINK I AM GETTING IT! THANKS.

CRAN...THANKS FOR THE RESPONSE. YOU WOULD HAVE LOVED IT.

Nope, buckwheat's not favorable carbohydrate for the Zone. You'll be better off using it like you mentioned....cat littter. :-) Really.

    Eat it very sparingly Mel.

Mel, did you get any recipes for those wonderful sounding dishes? I would love to try them! I could experiment, but would be great to work off of a recipe.

Even if what you have is unfavorable, you can buy "oat groats" or "steel cut oats", and make very similar dishes.

SUE....WHEN I FIRST SAW THE #31 I BEGAN TO THINK IS THIS FOR REAL. LOL THAT;S WHY I POSTED HERE BEFORE I GOT CARRIED AWAY DURING MY "LOSING PHASE". MY DD AND HER BF WILL BE HAPPY TO GET THEM!!!

CRAN....THE "CURRIED BUCKWHEAT SALAD" RECIPE IS HERE:
    http://www.bobsredmill.com/recipes_...rch+%3A%3A
AND I HAPPENED TO LIKE IT WARM.

AS FOR THE ONE WITH ALL THE VEGGIES...SHE SAUTEED FINELY DICED CELERY, ONIONS, GR. PEPPER AND MUSHROOMS. THEN FOLLOWED THE "BASIC COOKING INSTRUCTIONS" FOR MAKING THE GROATS. THE BASICS ARE ALSO IN THE ABOVE LINK. I HAVE THE STEEL CUT AND LOVE THEM. WILL TRY SWITCHING THEM THIS MONTH. GOOD IDEA.

I looked at that recipe, and I think it would be easily adaptable to the Zone by using oat groats in place of the buckwheat groats. Now, just have to get my hands on some, and will definitely give it a try!

    Thanks for the idea, Mel!

We had snowstorm and of course my sick DD, otherwise I would have jumped in the car and drove off to the store to find some oat groats!

Today, DH is staying home so that I can go to work. Maybe I can stop off after that.

Notice that link was posted in FEB 2010!
It is o Bob's Red Mill website.
I would try doing a search on Bob's Red Mill,
and if not found, ask them for it.
    .
    OR
    .
Have any other Zoners, around in Feb 2010 - did you download this recipe,
and if so, can you post it in the Forums?
    .
I think the only steady Forum Zoners have been myself, Cranberry Cat, and Sue.
Myself being the youngest (poster that is) <grin> - only around since May 2004.

I tried the recipe using oat groats in place of the buckwheat groats. It isn't one of my "go to" recipes but I do recall that it was very good. I would recommend cutting back on the raisins and adding more vegetables. Definitely would need some protein to go with it.

I found the original recipe and the link is below:

    http://www.bobsredmill.com/recipes_...p?rid=1264

BTW, I am a bit younger (in Zone years) than John! I didn't start posting here until later in the year of 2004! Started Zoning in June of 2004, that was just over a year after my 3rd daughter was born (now she is turning 9). My kids handed me a really nice compliment this past weekend, my oldest daughter said that I look a lot better (thinner) than I did back at that time (hmmm, what does she want me to buy for her?)
