What Constitutes a Bowl of Oatmeal?

    Dr. Sears says that a good way to get a small dose of GLA into the diet to have "a bowl or two of oatmeal per week". How much constitutes a bowl? 1 Block? 2, 3?

    Jordan, any of those. GLA needs differ among individuals. You can use the SIP (Silent Information Profile, aka ESR, Eicosanoid Status Report), to fine tune it to your specific needs. BTW, he's referring to slow cooking steel cut oatmeal that takes at least 30 min to cook. You will not get the GLA benefit from those with shorter cooking times, nor will you get it from rolled oats or instant oats (because of the additional processing).

    I "cook" my oatmeal by putting it in a Thermos and adding boiling water. It is ready the next morning. Voila! "Instant Oatmeal" Do you think that would qualify for the 20+ minute cooking? It is certainly slow. lol

    Yes, that counts as slow cooking! However, you still need to make sure that you use slow cooking oats (ie: steel cut or groats). Cooking rolled oats in a thermos overnight wouldn't count <smile>!
