    How do I count edamame in my meal plan? Is it considered a carb like a kidney bean, or a protein like tofu? Do I count the carbs in it? The package I have shows a serving has 7 g protein and 8 g carbs. Would appreciate some guidance.

    Debra, edamame is counted as both carb and protein.

    Be sure to also subtract any dietary fibre from the grams of carbs.

    Recently my naturopath encouraged me to add at least 100mg of soy to my diet, and gave me a list of soy content of foods. Edamame is one of the easiest, as 1/3 c=100mg, and is about 1 block protein and half a carb.

    I don't see edamame in the store very often, but I saw it yesterday as I was shopping, and so I picked up a bag of frozen edamame. I think I will try a block of it to see how it works as a snack.

    I love edamame. You can put chopped bell peppers in it with a low carb sauce or even add a little corn if you haven't used up all your unfavorables for the day.

    I like adding it to some soup, or just eating them plain and salted. There's some research that says that soy protein is more filling and satisfying than animal protein, thus recommended for weight loss (sorry, I don't have the reference... got the info from my naturopath).

    Xee, I have heard that before, but my experience with soy has generally been the opposite. But, we are all different!

    Sounds good, just eating them plain and salted!

    xee, you're right. Barry Sears explains it in his books.

    I was just reading Soy zone and dr sears said that edamame should not be counted as a protein, because of the amount of carbs. He said it should only be used as a stand alone snack or meal. So I probably went out of the zone with lunch then because i had edamame with shrimp and cheese, bell peppers and corn.

    I am wondering if that applies to packages of edamame also labeled as "Soy Nuts" as well?

    1/8 cup:
    Fat = 2g
    C = 5g-4g=1g
    P = 7g

    Interesting, I had edamame for a snack yesterday afternoon, and I really didn't get any satisfaction from it, so probably threw me a bit OOZ.

    Im interested to know how you tie satisfaction to being out of the zone, if ooz means that. Edamame is simply the plain soy bean, which has a great Carb to Protein profile, similar to soymilk - which is a great in the zone food stuff. Do you define satisfaction as taste, being saited. The taste for Edamame can be an aquired thing. As far as getting a feeling of being full from eating it, it has a very low fat content so you would really have to eat it with a fat block food to feel saited.

    What I meant was that I had it for my snack, and I was hungry too soon after eating it. It was not a snack that kept me in the Zone, although I did enjoy it (I like edamame). And, yes, I did accompany it with fat, although at this point I don't remember what the fat was, since it was several weeks ago.

    Thanks for all the info! I love edamame and my favorite way to eat it is plain (steamed and lightly salted) as a snack. So this is wonderful news to me!

    Thanks!

    I just bought edamame seeds, and will grow them in summer. But, they aren't great nutrition. The phytates inhibit minerals and there is too little protiein.
