Which protein powder to buy? And how many teaspoon of protein powder is one block protein? I never had protein powder. Do I need to take raw protein powder? Or need to mix in water? Is WHEY protein is good? What are the ingredients and nutrition to look in the protein powder? Thanks. |

All protein powder is NOT the same. Dr. Sears offers one. I use a less expensive alternative (Jarrow, unflavored) - almost pure protein powder, no additives. How much to use? The label of the product you have (or purchase) will tell you. They usually come with a scoop. Most scoops I've seen are about 3 blocks (servings), varying from 18g protein to about 24g protein. Careful, some protein powders have more carbs (as mostly sugars). How to use? That is up to you. I often mix with water, or occasionally with some (local, organic, low-fat) milk. You could mix it with most anything. . A some times typical breakfast: Protein powder mixed with water and poured on top of fresh berries (or defrosted frozen berries when not in season) with either some olive oil or almonds added, and some times adding lo-fat, organic, plain yogurt. Or eating also lo-fat cottage cheese as part of the protein portion. With all adding up to 3 blocks of each of P, F, & C. |

Jayaprakash, also note tha protein powder is not a necessity for the Zone diet. It's a convenient way to boost the protein content of a meal or snack. I've used many brands of protein powder over the past 15 years. I've found Dr. Sears Zone Protein Powder, by Zone Labs, to be the best by far. |

Looks like some good advice, questions answered; I would just add that I buy Biochem protein powder, it is also a protein powder with very few additives, almost pure whey protein. I used to use the Zone's protein powder, and it ok, but it does have a few more things on the label, ingredients that most can't pronounce (my general rule of thumb). |

Just for kicks, I compared the BioChem to Jarrow: Ingredient.....Qty Bio...Qty Jarrow Price..........$23.65....$18.99 Servings.......28........39 $/Serving..... .84...... .48 Fiber.......... 0 ....... 10 Protein........ 20 ...... 18 Carbs (Sugar).. 4 ....... 1 Calories....... 100 ..... 90 Sodium......... 40 ...... 45 Potassium...... 22 ...... 88 Amino Acids.... 0 ....... numerous essential and non-essential Calcium........ 108 ..... 0 Iron........... .17 ..... 0 Phosperous..... 55 ...... 0 Magnesium...... 26 ...... 0 Stevia......... 75 ...... 0 . Note: Jarrow: is unflavored version, not Vanilla nor Chocolate. BioChem: Sport, Vanilla. Did not see an unflavored. Flavor might explain additional carbs. |

John, thanks for the analysis. Yep, they do have an unflavored variety, which is the one that I use. Fiber <0.5 Protein 20 Carbs 1 Calories 80 Sodium 60 Potassium 130 Amino Acids numerous per info on can I am impressed by the cost, though! Do you by Jarrow in a store, or do you get it online? I generally pick up Biochem at Whole Foods Market. |

Online: Vitacost or Swanson are both discount vitamin suppliers. I use those and Puritan's Pride for the nutrients that I do NOT purchase from iHerb. (YES, I keep kind of a spread sheet of products, cost, potency, and cost per serving. Just recently finding Swanson - while doing a search when some one else mentioned how simple and pure Jarrow protein was. Unfortunately, no Whole foods near us (NH). . Right now through 15 Feb, though I do not spend that much, Swanson is offering free shipping through 15 Feb for all orders over $65.00. |

I am using GNC pure whey protein powder, 21g protein, carbs, 2, calories 110. It is amazing the differences. I don't know what I paid as I have had it for a while, but am guessing since it is GNC that it was pricey, and I don't use it very often since I prefer the whole foods, but it is convenient every once in a while. |
