The Food Block List shows Barley as 1/2 TBSP (dry). I bought Pot Barley and for a 1/2 cup Serving on package would be 1 Protein Block, 6 Carb Blocks, .33 Fat Blocks.

So a 1/4 cup servicing would be 1/2 Protein Block, 3 Carb Blocks and 0 Fat Blocks. I used the calculation illustrated in "What to Eat in the Zone".

The package shows 1 Gram of Fat, 78 Grams of Carbs, Fibre 16 Grams, Protein 10 Grams.

Is 1/4 cup of cooked Barley an acceptable equivalent to the dry measurement based on the above? I was looking for an alternative to rice as Barley shows an acceptable Grain.

Would Protein be counted in Barley?
Being a grain, usually Protein is "bound-up" and not useable, thereby not counted, unless the Protein is Soy, is my understanding...

    Hi John & Sheryl,

John, you make a good point, the protein in the barley wouldn't be considered a hi-quality protein so you don't have to count it. The hi-quality protein w/ all the essential amino acids would be the egg & flesh of animals(meat).
