    Hi all,

My partner and I are newbie Zoners - only a couple of weeks in and both of us are experiencing horrible bloating and gas to the point of being very uncomfortable (let alone how the people around us feel)...has anyone had a similar reaction and does anyone please know what to do to alleviate this embarrassing side effect? I have started taking probiotics (on second day) but have not noticed any difference. Partner is drinking smoothies for breakfast with protein powder but I have no protein powder in my diet at all.

Thanks so much for your advice.

Probably the increase in fiber from eating veggies, fruits, legumes. You could ease into it, maybe decrease some of the items that you are consuming with high amounts of fiber, and work your way back up. Another idea is to try some Beano. It will help until your bodies become accustomed to the higher amounts of fiber.

Hi and welcome! Have you increased your vegetable and legume intake? Fiber will cause gas, and also certain types of protein powder. A suggestion would be to keep a diary, and log your foods and side effects for a few weeks. Don't let this minor setback keep you from enjoying all of the benefits of this diet.

Thanks for your suggestions - its hard not to be eating fiber when the bulk of every meal is veggies and fruit - may have to go on beano and see if that helps.

Dina, Dr. Sears has advised newbies with the "gas situation" to cut back on veggie amounts , adding denser carbs in their place for the short term (even some unfavorable C, if need be), and then gradually increasing to larger volumes of veggies in meals. As your system gradually gets used to larger volumes of veggies in this manner, the gas will go away.
