Hi there, I know that 1/4 cup of cooked lentils is 1 C block. Does anyone know what a block of dried lentils is? I want to make a zone friendly dahl and it calls for starting with dried lentils. Any tips on a recipe would also be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks |

Usually, the dried lentils come in a package, so I would recommend starting with the label information and go from there. Looking on another website, I see that an ounce of raw lentils is a block of carb, after subtracting the fiber. But, not sure if raw and dry will be the same or not. |

Victoria, if you bought in bulk, with no label to use, you could measure some dry lentils (1/4 cup would be a good amount), then cook them (they cook very fast, and usually increase in size, though some varieties break down fast, like the little red ones) and then measure them again after they've been cooked. You'd have your answer. |

From Mastering the Zone, I recall writing down two of Dr. Sears recipes that call for lentils. Comparing two recipes, he indicated:
1 cup cooked lentils = 1 Carb block and 1/4 cup dry = 1 Carb block

i have one recipes for lentil. but i dont know how to calculate the block
dried lentil (dhal) cloves of garlic tumeric powder curry powder
boil them until it's cook. simmer until it thicken.
then in the frying pan (this will make the soup taste so good) fry some dried chilly mustard seeds onion
put inside the lentil soup
u can eat those with chapati / tortilla or eat it like soup. |

Hi Im new to this diet and was wondering: does anyone know if lentils can be considered 1 block of Prtoein too? Evn though its a vegetable protein? |

Do not usually count protein in grains, unless Soy. Not sure about Lentils? Here's make-up of 1 ox cooked, unsalted: P = 2.6g, .4 blocks F = 0.1g, 0 blocks C = 5.7g, .6 blocks

Alexia, Dr. Sears explains in his books that he doesn't count the protein in most veggie foods, some exceptions being soy and gluten "meats", because some of the protein in plants is trapped inside intricate structures of insoluble fiber. Since unsoluble fiber doesn't break down in the human digestive tract, the trapped protein never becomes available for absortion. This makes most plants and unreliable source of protein for humans. |
