Last night my husband and I stuffed our large crockpot with a large turkey leg with thigh plus one more thigh, with skin removed. It filled the pot, except for the few carrots mushrooms and onion we snuck in and the can of diced tomatoes. Lots of curry powder shaken over the pieces, salt, and cooked overnight. this morning it was all falling off the bone, so we just pulled bones out with tongs. YUMMM.
Inexpensive, and it will feed us for days!!

YUMMY! I will have to forward that to my DH, he is at home trying to come up with some crock pot ideas (or in his case, crack pot ideas!)

    Hi janet!

Here's a tip. With turkey, the dark meat (as in thigh, drumstick, neck, etc.) is not Zone friendly because of the fat it contains.

Janet, before you give up on dark meat from turkey, maybe you can ask Sue how much AA is in that dark meat, compared to a red meat?

I don't know the numbers, but I would think that dark meat from turkey is still probably a better option than a comparable serving of beef.

    Hi Zoners!

For anyone who wants to look up the amounts of AA in meats, you can easily do so using the USDA food database. I recently posted the address of it here in the Zone Forums, along with the numerical references used for various fats. My post containing that info can quickly be found with a search for USDA. It's in the second hit.

The search function has not been working for me. Can you please make it nice and easy for me (and others) to find the post that you are referring to? Or, maybe even just directly post the address?

Oh boy! I did some searching and the info I found was all over the place! (I used google:" turkey, beef, arachadonic acid") It was very interesting.....vegetarian hot dogs had the highest omega 6, beef the lowest....and many other strange data.....I get that its not always what we think.....but I will go for white meat turkey next time.

Yes, I agree with you janet! It's eye-opening! The USDA database I mentioned earlier shows that cooked turkey drumstick meat contains 5 times the AA of cooked beef rib eye, cooked turkey thigh contains 4 times as much AA as cooked beef rib eye, and egg yolk contains about twice as much AA as turkey drumstick meat.

And, what was the link to that website? I can't do a search for the link in the forums because it isn't working for me.

I found a web site, http://www.nutritiondata.com/, which has a feature where you enter your recipe and it evaluates it nutritional content, including inflammatory factor. I was wondering why my turkey soup recipe was unfavorable; now I realize it was because of the turkey drumstick, rather than breast.
