Can you eat according to the Zone Diet and [b:60d0a3772b]gain[/b:60d0a3772b] weight? My Dad is quite thin ever since he had a surgery (6-7 yrs ago)... and he could use a few extra pounds. |

I zoned a hot chocolate recipe, using whey, fructose, and cocoa. You microwave 8 oz of low-fat milk for a minute, stir in three heaping teaspoons, and zap it for another 80 seconds. It comes out to about 2 blocks instead of the normal 1 block snack, but it goes down easy. - Charlie |

So, should he add one block to the blocks he should eat (14 blocks)?
Thanks for the zoned hot chocolate tip! :) |

Hi,
If 14 blocks provides the appropriate amount of protein for his needs, he should add only extra monounsaturated to gain weight. He can double or triple (or more) his fat blocks if necessary, in order to gain. Once he has gained appropriately he should go back to normal Zone balance for fat.

Hi,
Yes, it is explained by Barry Sears (in one of theZone books, I think, or maybe in the archived "Ask Dr. Sears" Q& A's) that if one's weight dips too low, which he describes as the ribs all showing, one should use additional monounsaturated fat blocks to gain.
Your Dad will want to add extra blocks of 1.5 g each. I would begin by doubling the amount of added monounsaturated fat blocks to each meal and snack. If that isn't enough, then add a little more. The extra fat will have no direct effect on his insulin levels, but will provied the calories he needs to gain.
