Hi Hot Rod, [quote:11f12d1672="hot rod"]I would like to know if this diet would benifit someone taking medication for high blood pressure?[/quote:11f12d1672] Followed correctly the effect would be you would likely no longer need medication. Particularly when taking PGFO. White Light

Blood pressure usually returns to normal within three weeks on a zone diet, often within one week so it's wise to go to you doctor after a week or so on the diet so he can tell you how to taper off your medication. If you get dizzy etc it's probably because the blood pressure medication is driving your blood pressure too low. One other point. Some blood pressure medications (mainly the older types) increase the production of insulin which can mess up a zone diet. What kind of medication are you on? Kindest regards, Andrew Cavanagh

Hi, White Light and Andrew are correct. I have experienced it first hand. I was on both a beta blocker and a short term calcium channel blocker and still my blood pressure was not lowering enough to put me solidly into the normal range. I began the Zone diet, with no noticeable change in BP until I added PGFO. Within a couple days of addign PGFO I was experiencing low blood pressure symptoms (was still on the 2 BP meds). With my doctor's help I was slowly adn completely weaned off both meds over a two week period. This was a number of years ago. My BP, without meds, is now lower than it has ever been that I can remember (last reading 117/69). I would add that I accomplished this with a very small dose of PGFO. The amount of PGFO needed can vary greatly between individuals. Beta blockers are one med that can interfere with the ability to lower one's insulin into the Zone. If you are takign a beta blocker you'll most likely have to be very careful with the use of carbs in the Zone. You may even want to speak with your health care provider about switchig to a different type of BP med which doesn't keep insulin elevated. Sue

Dear Sue, What great results! My husband is interested in beginning PGFO to help get him off of cholestorol meds and BP meds. He is Zoning (probably 75% of time). I'm curious how many capsules of PGFO you take, and whether you have decreased your dosage as time has past. FYI: He's letting his docs know about adding the PGFO. Thanks, Robin

If you are taking Sears fish oil I would highly recommend you ask their sales staff about dosage. They are very experienced and qualified in this area. Their advice on what doseage to take and how to take it is excellent and they do consult with Dr Sears if they have any problems or questions they can't answer themselves. Outside of that, dosage is explained in Dr Sears book the Omega Rx Zone in the chapter "Who wants to die of a heart attack." Usually you take a cholesterol test then try to lower your Triglyceride/HDL ratio down to 0.3 to 1.5 or thereabouts. Lower is generally better. Kindest regards, Andrew Cavanagh

Thanks, Robin[/quote:041dce0bff] Hi, Everyone's needs are different in regard to PGFO. I am an unusual case, and certainly not an exapmle to follow! I take 1 capsule every third day. This very low dosage was arrived at several years ago with the personal help of Barry Sears. He became involved because within the first couple days of taking PGFO (and at only 1/2 the recommended dose) I began experiencing low blood pressure symptoms within an hour of taking it, which made me unable to function normally. This continued for almost a week, at which point Barry helped me with the dosage. At one point he had me taking a small amount with a children's medicine dropper. I worked up to the one capsule per day. No, I have not decreased my dosage. Doing so would mean I'd take a drop or two! Several times I have tried to slightly increase the dose, as recently as last Fall, but it has always resulted in the same negative symptoms. Just to show individual differences, my son, now age 18, began taking 2 tablespoons liquid PGFO (about the equivalent of 27 capsules)several years ago under the direction of Barry Sears. He has since cut back to 1T (about 13-14 capsules) per day and is doing very well. Sue
