I am not auto-immune, but I can tell you that the Zone is a great place to start! First, the food plan will help you to keep your insulin levels under control. Not sure if you know, but taking steroids on a chronic basis can induce diabetes. So, it is likely that your insulin levels are probably high, just because of the steroids. So, attacking it from the food side of it is very important! And, I would automatically start by dropping a carb and adding fat. If you are a 3-blocker for meals, then eat 3P, 2C, and 5F. This will help with the carb sensitivity and help to reduce insulin levels. Second, I would recommend that you take fish oil. For auto-immune disorders, the recommendation from Dr. Sears is to start with 2 tsp liquid or 8 capsules (if you are taking his brand). The EicoRx would be appropriate for you, if you are considering the brand sold on this website. You can work up to 4 tsp or 16 capsules. These things should help you to reduce inflammation. I don't know if you are able to exercise with your condition, but that will also be of help. 30 minutes per day is great! Let me know if there is anything else I can do to help. |

I have autoimmune thyroiditis and have been able to lose weight without meds following the zone. (I posted this in a couple other threads so)- I have autoimmune thyroidism (hypo) and I am supposed to take 0.125 mcg/day of Synthroid, however, for various reasons I choose not to. I have been able to get my bodyfat% under 10% following a strict Zone diet. I laugh when all these overweight people blame their weight[gain] on their thyroid. Rubbish! Its the food they eat. I do try to take a high dose of fish oil, use cayenne (40,000) when feeling "cold" and/or apple cider vinegar for a "boost", use an all organic (real food) multivitamin, a lower bowel formula (essential - imo), avoid milk (dairy), drink distilled water - everyday. I lift heavy weights (for me) about 3x per week. I have found I feel completely different on the Zone then when not on it. And by completely I mean way better! I have been following the Zone on and off (mostly on) for the past 13 years or so. It works. |

Hi matt,
Glad to hear you've done so well! You're very forutunate that you've been able to compensate for your lower thyroid levels without further interventions. Keep up the good work! |

Hi! I am new here, and this is my first post!!
I have chronic moderate to severe Crohn's-Colitis. I had been on extremely high levels of prednisone for over 2 years (started in the hospital with 180 mg and went home with 50-80mg day for almost 2 years!). I had gained well over 100 pounds and have yet to get it off even after being off of the prednisone for 2 years. I was always a heavy person, but now at 325, I am at my worst.
And this is why I am here! I am hoping that I can maybe alter my disease so it is no longer chronic and goes from severe to minimal. And of course, I am hoping to lose the weight gained with the prednisone and then some! I will check in from time to time to let you know how it goes. And I hope, Erika, that you too are seeing success!!
It seems really simple? After being on the prednisone for so long, and getting so big so fast, I kinda gave up on losing it. This looks like something I can do, and it seems I can even alter the foods to go along with my faith-based eating and change up the veggies that I can't eat (thanks to the Crohns).
Here's to new friendships, and a new life!! |
