Hi, This is my first time posting at this web site. I bought some Basmati Rice and Sour dough rye bread. Both of this products have Low-GI written on them. My question is "can these foods be incorporated into my zone diet?". Do these foods have a low enough GI to be considered to be in the zone? Of course I understand that I would need to consume these foods with a proportionate amount of good oil and protein.

    Thanks in advance,

    Hi Dave!

They are both unfavorabl carbs, so use them very sparingly. Dr. Sears recommendation is to use unfavorable carb for no more than 25% of all the carb in a meal.

I have to agree with Sue. I find it hard to believe that bread and rice are low glycemic index. I would avoid them entirely or keep them to 1/3 or 1/4 of your carbohydrates in any given meal or snack.

So is it ok to eat some High GI carbs - just in small amounts?

Dr. Dears recommends that no more than 25% of your carbs come from unfavorable sources. However, I think you will find after doing the math, that you will likely avoid most unfavorable carbs in the long run.

For example, I think 1 block of rice is 1.5 cup. Seems like a waste when you can have a cup of strawberries instead.

Likewise break is something like 2 blocks of carbs for a single slice. Following Dr. Sears's suggestion regarding unfavorable carbs, most men and women would only get about 1/2 of a slice of bread in a given meal.

I agree with Matthew. I prefer having 2 cups of strawberries for my 2 blocks of carbs than 1 cup of ugly white rice (which I love by the way, but the consequences of having it are terrible for my stomach!)

I also am done with bread. Not a piece for 2 months now and still alive!!! Ha ha ha (that means I do not need it). Miss it terribly but since I had a breakdown a while ago and ate 3 pieces of delicious mexican sweet bread and had a terrible hangover the morning after, won't do it again!

So try to stay as far as you can from unfav carbs my friend :)

    XOXO.

    Great advice Barbara!

Honestly, after spending so many years in the Zone , I don't miss bread at all.

Great! I am looking forward to it (not missing it at all), but I believe that's a battle you fight a day at a time. For now, I do not touch it.
