I am having a hard time uderstanding how much fat to use when using protien powder.

What I am currently doing is using as many blcoks of fat that I use for protein powder. Is that the right approach? If not, what should I look for in figuring out the amount of fat blocks to use when I use protein powder?

    Thanks,
    Dave

    Hi Dave,

If your protien powder contains no fat, or if it contains less than 1.5 grams fat to every 7 grqms protiein, then double the number of fat blocks you would usually add (add 2 blocks fat for every 1 block of protein powder). This applies to any very low fat or fat free protein. Other fat free proteins commonly used in the Zone are egg whites, fat free dairy products, imitation soy meats, and some varieties of deli-style meats.

I checked my protein powder. I scoop contains 18g of protein and 2g of fat. So that puts the protein to fat ratio at about 2.5.

Therefore I would not have to add anymore fat; right?

Not quite. 18 grams P is just short of 3 blocks P, close enough to call it 3P (7 grams p per block). A minimum of 1.5 grams fat is presumed to be in every Zone P block. Your product falls short, so you can either add another 2 1/2 grams (almost 2 F blocks) or, to make it easier and not need to tediously count grams, just double the fat blocks per each block of that protein powder that you use.

I just checked the protein powder that I currently have and it's only 16 g of protein and 1 g of fat. Should I count that as only 2 blocks of protein and add the additional 2 blocks of fat for that meal?

I use egg white protein so I add all of my fat for that meal to the smoothie.

    Hi, Stacey!

Yes, I would only count that as 2 blocks of protein, and add the additional 2 blocks of fat.

    Stacey,

You could also use a slightly heaping scoop and call it 3 blocks P. If you do that, add 3 extra F blocks to the meal.
