I've been going through the Glycemic Index Table and I've come to the startling conclusion that it's possible many veggies that us zoners would consider favorable, if eaten as a main source of carb really might not be.

I'm thinking in terms of mainly some of the root veggies, like Kohlrabi, Radishs, turnips and some other high sugar veggies like Cabbage: these are all considered favorable carbs yet they are very very similar to rutabaga which has almost the same Glycemic index as White Bread!.

As someone who loves Kohlrabi, and literally eats close to 2 pounds of it a day, this got me to wondering whatever or not they can actually be considered a favorable Carb as it is essentially a root vegetable from the same family and composition as rutabaga - which in terms of keeping your body in the zone is as good for you as white bread.

I have the same problem with cabbage, of which I probably get around 30-40Carbs a day from. No GI testing has actually been done it. 50G carbs of Cabbage has 30G of simple sugars! GO here: http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/search/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.nal.usda.gov/fnic/foodcomp/search/ and put in cabbage

That's far more sugar then a similar carb count of raspberries/strawberries, which not only have much higher gi's then Cabbage, but most of their sugar comes from fructose which is a lower GI sugar then the sugar in cabbage which mostly comes from Glucose.

The amount of Sugar(Glucose) in Rutabagas per Carb are almost exactly the same as the amount of Sugar in Cabbage per Carb
Again compare similar carb amounts here: with rutabagas and cabbage

Makes me want to just stick with Broccoli: low in sugars(most of which comes from fructose) and high in fiber/protein. I believe that is is certainly a low-GI veggie.

Anyone have any actual ideas about the glycemic index of some of these vegetables(There doesn't seem to be any actual data done on tests of them)? and if they are favorable/unfavorable. Anyone else eat a lot of Root Veggies or Cabbage? How do you feel about it in keeping you in the zone?

Root vegetables do not keep me in the Zone, but I don't really eat too many of them, either. Carrots definitely DON'T keep me in the Zone, despite the fact that they have been upgraded to favorable status in the Zone. I don't eat too much cabbage, but my experience with it is the same, doesn't keep me in the Zone.
