A zone trail mix would be good, wouldn't it? You could take it in the car....etc. etc. I am thinking: cheese for the protein....so let's see, almonds, dried...what? apples? currants? blueberries? and cubed cheese. But what kind? manchego would be my choice, a sheep cheese. Of course it wouldn't keep well with the cheese, but maybe if you kept the cheese in a separate bag....hmmm. just a thought.

I can't think of one that will work. Dried fruits aren't usually zone friendly from what I can remember.

My road snack in a small cooler is 1 oz cheese 1/2 cup grapes & 3 almonds. Really on the fly I go for a snack bar.

We use Zone Cereal as a trail mix. Our favorite additions to it are OG cacao nibs, and sometimes a few OG gogi berries. Zone Cereal is a bit low in carbs so its still Zone balanced with these additions, as long as you keep them to a minimum.

(Matt, I should be posting this in my Zone food thread that went nowhere!)

we used to have a recipe with soy nuts for the P and mini-m&m's for the F&C. I can't find the ratio. When mini-M&Ms came out in tubes it was an easy fill for a 1 block snack. I hope that gives you a thought. Sue's idea of Zone cereal is way easier. And dried fruit is just too carb.

    Sue,

Could you tell me what the ratio is for the three items you mentioned? So if you were to start with 1/2 cup Zone cereal, how much would you add of the OG cacao nibs and OG gogi berries to keep it balanced and portion controlled?

    Thanks, Charisse

    Hi Charisse!

Just a little bit of each. It works out since Zone cereal is a bit short on carb.

Charisse, you could also use Kashi Go Lean cereal for your trail mix. You may be able to use a larger volume of cereal (I always feel better if I can see that I am eating more). And, the only thing lacking is some fat, but you can toss in some slivered almonds.

You couldn't use Kashi Go Lean and be Zone balanced if you add a few extra carbs because that cereal contains more C than Zone cereal. If you added a little more C to Kashi Go Lean, you'd take it out of balance becaue it already contains the Zone balance of P to C. This means you'd also have to add P to if you add C. I'm not sure what you could use for P in a dry trail mix. Soy nuts comes to mind, btu that wouldn't solve teh problenm adding P so you could add a litel extra C. They contain Zone balanced P and C , so you'd still need additional P. Kashi Go Lean is much lower in fat than Zone cereal so some type of fat would also have to be added. The easiest way to do a cereal trail mix would be to use Zone cereal as the base.

CranBCat didnt say to add more carbs, she said to add more fat, because the Kashi Go Lean was low on fat. The Go Lean is a good choice and maybe just add a few almonds or cashews.

Alene, I'm referring to my own suggestion about adding some cocoa nibs and gogi berries (carbs) to Zone Cereal to make a trail mix (see my post of 5-9 in this thread). It won't work with the other cereal mentioned because it contains more carbs than Zone cereal contains.

Sorry, but that wasnt clear since it followed CBCat's comments about using the Kashi.
