I went to the health store and Sam's to pick up some Omega-3's. Never would I have guess there was so many different type of fish - much less fish oil! Is there a particular brand, or type of fish oil (salmon, cod, etc...) that I should be using?
I am wanting to get it in a capsule form.
Thanks! |

There are many out there on the shelves, and fairly cheap. They are probably what we call "18:12" or "180:120".
This means that in a 1-gram capsule there are 180 mg of EPA and 120 mg of DHA. That means only 30% of the oil is the essential fatty acids you want, in a 3-to-1 ratio EPA-to-DHA, and the rest contains some neutral oil and some toxins, heavy metals, and maybe Omega-6. This oil is what is called 'molecularly distilled' to concentrate the good stuff, but it's not quite ideal.
If you take those pills, it's better than none at all. But don't take more than 2 per day.
A much better oil, according to latest studies, is the oil Dr. Sears 'invented': pharmaceutical-grade fish oil. It is twice as 'strong', with 60% EFA, and in a 2:1 ratio. (A 1-gram cap contains 400mg EPA and 200mg DHA.) The toxic contaminates are minimized while the EFAs are concentrated, so you can take 4 pills per day as maintenance dose, (and up to 16 a day for serious conditions) without risking mercury poisoning among other maladies.
This PGFO is much more expensive than what you find at Sam's. |

Natural Factors brand (Rx Omega-3) is a 60% 400mg EPA 200mg DHA product. Their contaminant levels are slightly higher than Dr. Sears, but far less than the minimum USA FDA/EPA requirements. However, cost is only $15.00 per 120 capsules. I take 4 per day, same as I would with Dr. Sears brand. If I could afford Dr. Sears brand, I might consider using theirs. |

It is now 2004, Have Natural factors subjected the product for testing yet ??
Who knows what is REALLY in it. ONLY products listed on www.nutrasource.ca are pharmacutical grade.
readers interested in the REAL thing should check that site.
As usual, Adam was right.

Is there anything I can buy over the counter? I also found ZonePerfect Omega-3 Fish Oils - they are pretty inexpensive...Are they the same or similar (as far as effect and strength)? |

Lots of fish oils are available over the counter but to the best of my knowledge no Pharmacutical grade is YET
The ZP brand appears cheap until you realize it contains exactly Half the omega-3's of a 40:20 PGFO
If you double the cost of zp to compensate for lack of potency and compare to Sears product the premium for pharmacutical grade looks far more reasonable.
However the product through pgfo.com represents by far the best value particularly if you buy in bulk.

Here of late the only time Whitelight posts is to "very coyly" promote and call attention to the particular fish oil he receives a commission to sell.
Whether or not this site allows this policy of solicitation, I think everyone should be aware when someone suggests a product they themselves receive money to promote.
e-mail me a dumdedumdum00@lycos.com and I will gladly prove my allegation. |

All right - on to the reason I asked this question.....
Since I wanted an over-the-counter solution, I went to a local health foods store that has a good reputation. They said that based on the Zone Diet that if I did not get Sears Omega-3 Fish Oil - I should go with Carlson's. My question is...How many do I take?
Here is the info:
Vitamin E - 10 IU
Omega 3 - 500 mg
EPA - 300 mg
DHA - 200 mg
Also - should I take them all at once? At meal times or bed time or when I wake up?
Thank you! |

The maximum dose for this health grade product is 2 caps
you should also take an additional 400 IU of vit E to get the maximum effect.
It should not matter when you take them that is entirely a matter of personal preference.

All right - two last questions on this topic...
I bought the e-gems from Carlson. Then, I went to Wal-Mart and found 400 I.U. Vitamin E capsules for a third of the price. Same thing? The information appears to be the same?
Finally - Do I need to keep fish oil capsules in the refrigerator?
Thanks! |

Dr Sears does not distinguish between brands of vit E. While I am sure there is a small difference it is not as fundamental as the other poster implied. At 1/3 the price I'd go with wal mart next time.
There is no need to refrigerate the fish oil caps

Thanks White Light...
Are there other supplements that I should be really focused on - or is Vit E and Fish Oils sufficient? I don't want to 'overdue' and have a cabinet full of vitamins - but also want to ensure positive physical health. I'm really making positive progress! |
