Can anyone say what is an appropriate amount of protein for young children? I've got a 4 yr old and 10 month old. I don't want to give the baby too much protein, but I'm trying to keep all of the meals balanced. I remember from the old forums to just give 1 block "meals" to young children, but what are some suggestions on adding fat (other than cheese)?
thanks,

Hi Robin!
I mostly eyeball my children's meals to be in the zone. However, in doing so, I've gone by the 1 block for young children thing...for my 18 month old....since he was about 1 year old. I've given him cut up black olives, sliced almonds (the flat thinly sliced kind), and avocado for fat blocks often. He does well with these.
My 5 year old has been in the zone for quite a while too. I tend to give her approx. 2 block meals...sometimes more at supper...or offer a zoned dessert after supper if she's still hungry. She has done really well with this.
I try to add a little extra healthy fat in their meals and snacks. Neither of them needs to lose weight at all...and I really try to make sure they're getting enough calories....and that my young son gets enough fat for nerve development, etc.
Oh, natural peanut butter is also another great fat source I've used.
Have you found that your children are more calm and well-behaved overall since starting the zone? Just curious.

I can't say they seem any calmer, but my 4 year old seems more muscular now that I try to balance his protein w/carbs. It is tough to keep him zoned since he goes to daycare and most of their meals and snacks are very high in carbs. I'm training both of them right, though, he loves his broccoli. I've even heard myself say, "No more broccoli until you eat some of your meat.( usually beef or chicken.) He's even amazed my brother-in-law by asking for more protein at breakfast. :)
Good luck with zoning and with your children.

[quote:5c83b94474="New2Zone"] It is tough to keep him zoned since he goes to daycare and most of their meals and snacks are very high in carbs. [/quote:5c83b94474] haha your telling me! I until recently I worked at a daycare and by law they are forced to give the kids juice fruits some veggies and some "carbs". In their mind carbs are just grains. The only time they really ever get any protein is at lunch time. Its rediculous and they wonder why the kids are always so hyper and hungry! |
