It is NEVER too early to start the zone! I am a mom with three kids, ages 4-8-11. I don't calculate blocks or ration their protein, etc, but I feel it is very important to give them zone favorable options for food, and what we eat is generally a balanced meal for them (however, I let them choose how much of this/that).

tim, my son (now 22) has been in the Zone since about 3rd grade. Dr. Sears recommends for teenagers to eat extra blocks because they'er still growing. Either figure out your blocks using a couple activity levels higher than you actual activity, or calculate your blocks with your actual activity level and add a few blocks to that result. The trick for you will be to remember to eat enough blocks.

    My birthday's in June, too!

Look at it this way--if you are not Zoning, than you are likely aging more rapidly.

    Hello Tim,

To answer your question: In agreement with everyone else - no you're not too young. Ideally, we would maintain our youthful vigor all our lives and the best way to do that is to stay in the zone.

Do you participate in sports at school too? I have 3 sons, the youngest of which, is 16 years old. He participates in cross-country skiing and cross-country running every year. That is another major factor in determining how many blocks you will need to eat and it's absolutely critical to having the best performance.

The great thing about eating in the zone, besides having more energy, is having more mental clarity. When I was in high school, there were days I just couldn't keep my eyes open and it wasn't from lack of sleep; it was insulin crashes from eating too many carbs. (taking trips to the donut hut at lunch!) It's so much easier to stay focused on the subjects in school when your head isn't bouncing off the desktop from nodding off.

Good for you for being aware of you diet and getting started now - you're way ahead of the game!
