so....adamh got me reading all these websites about soy and lectins and paleolithic diet, etc. and since Dr. Sears is a cutting edge scientist I wonder what he makes of the lectin issue. Any dialogue here? (and what about his "soy zone"? has he moved away from that?)

I think Sears has taken the middle road with respect to soy. It has less of an insulin impact than other proteins, but in excess can disrupt endocrine receptors. You can probably find good and bad things about every food group eaten to excess. If you read the Soy Zone, he recommends a blend of animal and vegetable protein sources which simply seems practical. I'll have to look up the lectin thing.

What Scott said. Moderation. Allow reasonable amounts of soy, red meat, dairy, fish. Vary your protein sources and you'll be happier and healthier. Extremism can get you in trouble. Example: My little brother follows a completely paleo diet. He's lost over a hundred pounds, but just had to have his gall bladder removed. I was a vegetarian for about 18 months, until my triglycerides registered 460. No that's not a typo. Does Sears now downplay soy? I don't see it, and I don't think he needs to. Increasing his recommendation of fish oil became the emphasis of Sears' continuing research. Sears' endorsement of soy's benefits has always been a position of moderation, it seems to me; it is different than the more politcal 'meat is murder' rant of PETA and other vegan extremists.
