Oh, that is easy! Have a bowl of steel cut oatmeal (1 cup cooked), and you can have 2 eggs (or 4 egg whites) and 3 slices of turkey bacon. Use some olive oil to saute.

For a little variety cut the oatmeal down to 2/3 cup and add 1/3 cup of natural apple sauce and some cinnamon and nutmeg, or half an apple diced instead of the apple sauce. Another one I've been doing lately is a cup of strawberries, 2/3 cup oatmeal and vanilla or chocolate flavored protein powder.

I mix up the eggs a little also. I use morningstar breakfast sausage mixed with egg whites mushrooms and onions topped with avocado or salsa.

There are so many options with just a few main ingredients.

thank you so much! I lost a bunch of weight 10 yr ago when I was a vegetarian and I ate totally differently...tofu was my breakfast or soy bacon....I wouldn't touch those now. I now eat meat but eat only natural stuff. So your help is essential cuz I can't rely on anything I used to do!

Janet, have you tried buffalo sausage? Its great! At least the kind I had was. Several health food stores usually carry it if they have a freezer section. Its very lean and tasty.

I do a LOT of egg/turkey bacon breakfasts. I dont just do egg whites, but, I do whole eggs.....I know, I know, but I usually do and I'm just being honest....two eggs with 3 slices of turkey bacon, applesauce with cinnamon and .....again, I know unfav, but, I do a small slice of whole wheat toast. If I do egg whites I have to cover them up with salsa...i just dont like them.

Our daughter grinds her own wheat flour and sometimes I make a cinnamon bread with the fresh flour. I do the dough in my bread maker but then roll it out and do a mixture of cinnamon and a pak or two of stevia , sprinkle it over the dough, roll it up and let it rise a second time before baking....its really good. A nutritionist had told my daughter when she had gestational diabetes that it was so high in fiber that it cancelled out the carbs. I have had Zoners that disagreed but it never messed up my Zoning. Stayed satisfied and lost weight. My fasting insulin levels still went down too.........but, probably would only work with the fresh ground wheat flour. Very simple recipe of only that flour, a bit of honey, salt, yeast and olive oil.

Otherwise, I've done one carb of steel cut oats with my eggs, turkey bacon, and applesauce..... or, my egg whites
turkey bacon and salsa. Also, if you're doing the salsa then I've also made an egg white omelet, a little cheese, topped with a mixture of black beans and salsa! That was pretty good.

    janet,

You might want to try Zone Cereal with either milk or soymilk, It's a quick, easy, and delicious balanced breakfast with a low GL. It's available in grocery stores, in healthfood stores and on this site.

thanks everyone, and feel free to keep talking. I am difficult bcause I don't eat milk or soy or wheat. So, yes, I occassionally have a pc of toast, but its millet toast. But I can't do the cereal for all the above reasons. No problem, there's plenty of other stuff like eggs and beans which sounds good....and the steel cut oats with turkey bacon.

A tip on your toast, if you are going to use it, try the "sprouted wheat" or Ezekiel Bread. The glycemic load of this bread is supposed to be lower than that of regular bread. Sears would still consider it unfavorable, so keep it to no more than 25% of your total carb for the meal. But, just so you know, it is an option!

janet, same with me re: soy, dairy, and wheat, though I'll take a little nibble of one of them once in a while. A quick breakfast I eat (also have it for lunch or dinner in a pinch) is a can of sardines packed in water, berries for carb, and some nuts.

sue, I am so glad to hear that you have some of the dietary quirks that I have! Now the sardine brkfst is a bit intense as I have never had sardines....but maybe I could try it.

yeah, sardines..you either like 'em or you don't. I happen to love them. My dad used to buy them for me when I was a kid...sardines and cherry pie! And I still love them both. I eat the cherries out of an ocassional piece of pie and leave the crust, lol! The reasons I don't do wheat, soy or dairy are medical ones.

the reason you don;t do wheat dairy or soy are medical ones? well, my reasons are... sorta ...medical. I have been on the blood type diet and more recently the genotype diet which indicates that those foods cause trouble for my type. I know you guys may think its a crackpot diet but it is actually awesome....its just that the zone gets weight loss results like no other. they are not in conflict with each other. I am trying to zone the foods that are good for my type....crazy? maybe. we shall see.

You can definitely manage both diets very well. Using the food lists from the BTD, you can use the Zone to balance them out. I am not familiar with the genotype diet, but you can probably use the same concept there.

    Not crazy at all!

    janet,

I've been combining the BTD with the Zone for years. I was introduced to it by my endocrinologist who is a proponent of combining the BTD with low carb eating. I'm O+ Sec. Not "crackpot" at all, lol! In fact Dr Sears answered a qn about the Zone and the BTD at a seminar a couple yrs ago, saying something to the effect that of greatest importance would be the avoids. I'd love to share tips on combining both diets. My endo also taught me how to closely listen to the body to learn what foods work best for you. Listening is an excellent way to learn.

The reason I avoid dairy (besides it being an O avoid) is that I am a hyperabsorber of calcium, an incidental finding on some routine blood work that was done in relation to bone density. I am among a small percentage of people who absorb almost all the calcium in the food they eat (most people absorb a much smaller percantage). It's not a disease, but puts me at higher risk for kidney stones, though luckily I've never had any. Dairy also upsets my stomach. The reason I avoid soy is that I have hypothyroidism. The reason I avoid wheat is that even a little bit, and I go out of the Zone and begin to retain fluid (may very well be related to being an O, and probably having a low level of Celiac's). So that one is "sorta ...medical". :)

hey...hey...been awhile since I checked in but so glad I did! You guys know about the BTD...how awesome is that...and Sue, you use it...wow. Yeah, well, I haven't been zoning for the last few weeks, but I'm gonna try it again. So I am O- which is why I avoid those things....Sears says avoid the avoids? interesting...the GTD is a newer version of the BTD...it breaks out into 6 types....but maybe I should stick to the zone while here....thanks folks. I love the egghummus recipe!! How do you figure with fiber? is it ...subtract mgs of fiber from carbs? for the carb reading?

hello, hoping someone can help me out. If i include whole eggs for my protein blocks (1 egg = 1 block), do i need to include the fat that are in the eggs as part of my fat source? I would imagine i would, otherwise the calories would be pretty high.thanks!

The fat in whole eggs is more than enough fat for the entire meal. If you use whole eggs you wouldn't need to add any F blocks to the meal.

Keep in mind that the AA in egg yolks will increase inflammation. Egg yolks are a food high in AA. Organ meats is another food containing greater amounts of AA. The Zone diet is designed to avoid foods containing high amounts of AA. For that reason it's recommended for the Zone diet to discard the yolks and eat the whites.

    Colleen,

If you don't eat whole eggs all that often (not more than 3 per week), then I would not worry too much about the AA in the yolk. But, if you are using whole eggs on a daily basis for a meal, then it is best to cut back and use just the whites.

thanks for the input. So for breakfast if I do a 6F 2C 3P meal. and have:
    1 whole egg
    4 egg whites
2/3 cup cooked steel cut oats

    - in this case i wouldn't add any fat since the whole egg contains lots of fat?
    thanks

    You're welcome Colleen!

No, one egg yolk would not provide enough fat for a 3 block meal. I meant using whole eggs for all your P in the meal would yield enough fat.

A 3 block meal with 3 fat blocks would contain a total of 9 g fat (4.5 g fat in the 3 P blocks and 4.5 g fat in the 3 F blocks. A 3 block meal with 6 fat blocks would contain a total of 13.5 grams fat (4.5 g fat in the 3 P blocks and 9g of fat in the 6 F blocks).

One whole egg usually contains 4.5 g fat, all the fat being in the yolk. You'd need to add another 9 grams of fat (6 F blocks) to yield 13.5 grams of fat. Some good Zone fat choices would be Macadamia nuts, almonds, olive oil, or some avocado slices in your omelet.

Because you're making an adjustment to gain better insulin control, I'd suggest that for better results you try some lower GL carbs with the oats, maybe 1 block oats and 1 block berries.

I think that an egg yolk from a large egg contains about 5 grams of fat. So, you would still need to add some more fat to your breakfast. How about some peanut butter?
