Hello there! I have recently returned from a trip to USA where i came across Dr Sears books...and well you guessed it...I'm hooked. But I am having terrible trouble finding the right sources of food here in Oz. Would love some help from all of you who have found particular food products here. In particular: which protein souce are you using? What is our equivalent of steel cut oats? ant other tips would be gratefully received many thanks Top :)

Please note Dr. Sears is not affiliated with this site, nor is he affiliated with ZonePerfect.

Steel cut oats are actual oat groats which have been cut in half. That's it. Just piece of grain, slice-o-rama, and there you go. They may have a different name in Oz, but they are a very simple thing, so you may be able to find them. If not, whole oats (sometimes called oat groats) are acceptable as well. Texture will be a little bit different, but they are zone-approved. :) Ronica

For all aussies out there I have also found: www.aussiebodies.com.au they produce several products that can be adapted to the Zone. In particualar their ProteinFx bars are nearly perfect Zone ratios. and their Perfect Protein (WPC) powder is nearly all protein. their products are readilly available in most shops near where I live. cheers chalice

Hi... Please keep in mind that just because a product falls into a good ZONE RATIO, absolutely doesn't assure that it's good for you! Technically, I could zone raw sugar or pasta, turkey and lard! Ingredients are important! Also...after eating the proper number of blocks of a given bar.....pay close attention to how long these keep you satisfied without hunger, tiredness or mental fog. Jim

Jim, could you please expand on your comment: [i:98e3ce2dd9]Please keep in mind that just because a product falls into a good ZONE RATIO, absolutely doesn't assure that it's good for you! [/i:98e3ce2dd9] if this protein bar has the right ratios of P:C:F and the fat is "good ", in what ways might it be "not good for me"? thanks Top

I think what he's referring to is favorable and unfavorable carbohydrates, fats and proteins. Dr. Sears encourages at least 75% of our carbs to be favorable, but allows up to 25% at each meal unfavorable. If we allow ourselves to go beyond these ratios, results (both weight and health-wise) are not guaranteed. For example, if I only go by 30-30-40- nutrition, I could eat chocolate bars, sausage and bread and say I was Zoning, but that's far from the truth. A better mix would be a stir fry with turkey, broccoli, peppers, onions, sugar snap peas and almonds. The effect on your blood sugar level of various carbs makes them unfavorable. Jim is just suggesting you check out the ingredients of this bar, and also experiment to see if it works for you. Everyone is different! It may be a good match, but you may find out that despite the ratios being zone-friendly, it may not be a healthy snack. Good luck! For your sake, I hope they are ok! Ronica

Hi TopBoffin I live in Melbourne. I have purchased steel cut oats of various brands from different health food shops without any difficulty. All the best with your zoning. Sunshower

[/quote:d9086dd1cf] Your green grocery, fish market, and butcher are good places to start. I used to find excellent protein powder cheap at Woolworths Markets. Your better off using the recipes for snacks and things on zoners' websites than buying zoned bars. www.karenskitchen.com www.zoneperfect.com both have good recipe sections. I used lots of fish, quail, chicken, and tofu when I was zoning in Oz. Scotch oats or Irish oats should be in most groceries. They're steel cut and as others have mentioned oat groats are good too. I prefer those much cheaper and health food stores almost always stock them. Formerly of Mona Vale, Joell

I'm in North Coast NSW (yes it's pretty hot right now). Anyone who can tell me where I can get stuff like protein powder that's acceptable or bars? I'm in a country town so getting my hand on any prepared stuff is well nigh impossible. I'd love to get some zone friendly bars and protein powder so even brand names would be a terrific help.

Hi Maigan, I sometimes mail order zone friendly bars from http://www.getzoned.com.au and I think they sell protein powder as well. These are not officially endorsed by Dr Sears, but the ratios are right and they hold me well when I use them.

Thanx ozzone :D What I'm after, though, are some brands and/or shops so I can pick up some stuff when I'm next in Sydney. I don't use credit cards (yes, really) so ordering online is a problem. *sigh* I'm just gonna have to get one eventually it seems.

Hi Maigan, I buy Aussie Bodies Protein Bars from Coles, Woolworths or most health food shops. The coconut flavour is really yummy (sort of like a Golden Rough ) and they also have a choc mint flavour. The price varies but it's usually around $4.00 a bar. If you wanted to order through get zoned the price is $28.00 for a box of 10 (delivery is free). You don't need a credit card to order, you pay by direct deposit into his bank account. Hope this helps.

Hey its great to see a few more Aussies replies! Re zone bars: the ProteinFX made by aussiebodies are available inPrice line, Healty Life, go Vita and most pharmacies Personally I use the cheaper slim fast bars which are readily available in supermarkets (Woolies or Coles) but you need to add a little extra protien to them which I do by eating some cottage cheese with them ( or equivalent) Protein powders: Aussie bodies puts out a protein powder made from Whey Protein concentrate (WPC) called Perfect Protein - it is available in Woolies and is also in my local healthfood shop. It can be purchased in LARGE quantites on the net. ( as can the bars) www.aussiebodies.com.au My personal choice is Redback WPi (whey protein Isolate) which has no added sugars or flavours and more protein per $ than the others i have also found a VERY cheap source of protien called soy isolate. My local health food store (Crows Nest) gets it in occasionally. ( $15 for 1000gms). I am experimenting with making my own bars using a combination of this and the protein powder. They are yummy. I like to combine the whey and the soy and then I'm getting a bit of both. Natura supply Woolies with various nut pastes such as almond, haslenut etc . I found it in the health food section. Yum. Tastes great in my oats. Maigan, which part of sydney do you visit? If you are any where near Crows Nest perhaps we could have a bar ( coffee?) together. Email me at littleblackdog@bigfoot.com if you are interested. cheers Top

Hey - my parents live in Wahroongah - I grew up in West Pymble and used to rent in Crows Nest at one stage - but became an inner city lover and spent most of my adult life around Balmain, Glebe, etc.... I would surely love to make contact so expect email. Here in North Coast NSW I'm limited but the bigger Woollies stores and one of the local pharmacies keep Aussie bodies. I've also discover a Mushashi powder that called SL*M and is not full of carbohydrate - 30gm of powder contains: P 21.5g F 0.95g C 3.89 This seems to be about the same as the Aussie Bodies powder. I found plain whey protein powderat the local health food shop. Country towns don't seem to get a lot in the way of health products - this surprised me here cos the town is in the hippie belt. No shops here carry unrolled oats and there is no demand. I'm not surprised - this is a good place to see just how obese many of the population are.
